The sale was the brain-child of Albert Houston of Chatham, Ont, a minor economist and a major money - maker. Houston believes taxation can be equalized if all currency and government bonds are recalled and then reissued. He also believes that, until he converts others to his scheme, he may as well have his share of the cash that is hoarded in attics and cellars, Buying up 69 broken-down tractors from Ontario farmers, Houston had them repaired, painted and shipped west in 25 railroad cars. Then he advertised his auction sale. Throngs Invade Town The response outdid even Hous- ton's dream. Yorkton had never seen anything like it. Hundreds of farmers came into town the day be- fore the sale. By evening, every hotel and boarding house room was filled. Throngs marched through the streets seeking beds mn private homes. Townsfolk accommodated about 300, Alderman C. G. Langrill opened the town hall auditorium as a dormitory and found space for S100 in the rooms of the King of Clubs (a teen-age centre), The Royal Canadian Mounted Police let four visitors sleep in jail cells. But most of the farmers had to bunk' in their cars or trucks, parked in and near the town, By sun-up (6:02 am), many of the visitors were looking for food. In the next two hours they were joined by the main invasion force. Every restaurant and food counter was jammed until supplies were exhausted. One restaurant served 3,652 weals. Then the crowd, bois- terous but never unruly, sought en- tertamment. In the seven hours the government liquor store was open, it handled more than 1,000 sales --mostly of gin, rum, beer and wine, which require no permit. Beer parlors sold about 70,000 glasses before their kegs emptied. Depart- ment and dime stores found buy- ers for almost everything they had on their counters. Sale Prices Soar But the auction brought the real display of ready wealth. Promptly at 10 a.m, three auctioneers started the sale. Farmers whose children were going to school in flour sacks just ten vears ago began bidding for tractors as though each was the Hope diamond. Sale prices for the patched-up machines ran $200 to $1,000 above their prices when new. A W-lo McCormick-Deering trac- tor, which cost $1.200 in 1938, sold for $2,000. A W-6 McCormick- Deering, costing $1,600 in 1944, sold for 32.500. By 6 p.m. the sale was over. Estimates of Houston's receipts ranged from $103,000 to $150,000. Yorkton figured the farmers had spent $300,000 in the town apart from the auction. Trainer Aircraft Built in Canada A new trainer aircraft, designed and built in Canada since the war ended, made its first flight at To- ronto on May 22. Created by The do Havilland Aircraft ot Canada, I.td., and built in the plant which during the war produced 1,100 of the famous Mosquito fighters and bombers, the new machine mects today's widespread demand for an entirely modern all-metal low-wing monoplane trainer for schools and clubs. The aircraft, which is named the de Havilland Chipmunk, is specific- ally designed as a replacement of the de Havilland Tiger Moth, the typ¢ on which the great majority of all the pilots of the British Com. monwealth and Empire were train ed in the 1030-1945 war. It has the 110 horse power Gipsy Major en- gine--the same engine as the Tiger Moth--and whilst offering the modern monoplane characteristics and the durability of all-metal con- struction, it weighs less® than the Tiger Moth and is about 40 miles an hour faster. Its weather-resisting structure and provisions for all-the-year secr- vice in Canada's exacting climate suit it for duty in any part of the world.
