Hatper, left on Tuesday for a trip to Victoria, B.C. They expect to return somé time in April. We wish them safe journey and a pleasant holiday. Mr, James Read, Jr. of Oshawa, spent the week-end with his parents, in. Port Perry. . De La Salle Robert Johnston, of the week-end School, was home for with his parents. Miss Holon Hayes is spending her vacation with relatives in Detpoit and London, We Murs. are sorry to learn that ~ Arthur Asher had to undergo an op- eration in Port Perry Hospital. She is doing as well as can be expected. Mrs. M. M. Boyd, Gary and Dianne, spent. the week-end with friends in Toronto. Richard I. Cragg Harking back to the coming fea tireenbank, Lancashire, ling.; in 1834, to 'the Canadian Greenbank, with his three sons, Isaac, Timothy and David, one would expect to find more des- cendents. Among these are Edward Till, grandson of "Timothy and 3lake Cragg, a grandson of David. Isaac by lis scecond marriage to Miss. His wife Abeagal Bell, predeceased him about a year ago, and he is mourned by one son Georgé Wilmott, M.D., superintendent of the St. Law- rence Sanitorium, Cornwall; Aletha with the T. Eaton Co.' Toronto; and Vera at home. Very beautiful floral tributes were from the family, Mrs. Sarah Merrett, the T. Eaton Co., the Board of Trus- tees and fhe executive staff of the St. Lawrence -Sanitorium. . A lover of rural life, Mr. Cragg was for many years a/most satisfactory employee of John Bears, Sr., Mr. I. Burnett, John Horne and others. Later he was very successful as a tenant on the R. Phair and the R. Flewell farms. He retired 26 years ago and remained in the village, He and a close friend, Robt, Michie, were fine examples of the possibility of remaining with the land and getting great joy out of life. Each endowed with fine native ability drank deeply of the streams of knowledge available from a good public school, helpful books, activity in the Sons'of Tem- perance and the Christian Church, neither had political ambitions but each acquired knowlédge and powers of debate which would have received 'marked recognition in any legislative assembly. Why do not the young pco- ple of today see the need of a better understanding of the problems of to- day, and ability to face these? Reference was made to a beautiful : pledge card distributed by the Sunday _--3chool in=1881, asking its signers te abstain from strong drink, the use of tobacco and profanity--not only did these two, but most of their compan- ions shape their habits 'of life along these lines. * In these days so marked by the excessive use of tobacco it is hard to believe that at one time the weed could not be bought in the. Per- king or Harrington stores at Green- bank, nor from Sam Baird at Saint- field, nor' Robert Thompson. at Sea- grave. There is a story that under the last store, years later, when doing some excavating a supply was found that had been buried for conscience sake, : > Ps i Vs eiginiants \ 7 YOUNG PEOPLE ASSIST IN PRE- SNES ASHE Atypa well-attended union service of the Manchester and Prospect congre- gations held in Manchester United Church on Sunday evening, February 16th, Young People representing both . It was decided to hold the annual meeting in Sunderland, March 24th, at 1.30 p.m. An outstanding speaker will be arranged for.
