Vance has pur- chased Mrs, Blight's property on Caleb street now occupied by Mr, and Murs, Slater, $ CANDLELIGHT SERVICE An ancient tradition of -beginning the Christmas festivities with a candle- light service is being revived in many of our churches That is to be the case again this year at the Church of the Ascension. The Church will be decorated with many candles and Christmas will be ushered im with the singing of some of 'the old favorite Christmas Carols. The Holy Communion will be celebrated begin- ning at midnight. The servieé will begin at 11,30 p.m. and the general public is always wel- come, There will also be a Commu- nion service on Christmas Day at 10,30 a.m. and the annual Carol Service on Sunday at 7 p.m, - UNITED CHURCH SUNDAY SCHOOL HOLD ANNIVERSARY SERVICES: _. School room. A large group of members and visitors attended this Christmas party. After singing Christmas Carols, the by Mrs. Riddell and two brief stories were well told, proving the pitiful lack of Christian educational teachings re- garding. the Christmas. story, instead of the commercial aspect. A fined prayer by our minister ended this de- votional period. The "new? ?" slate of officers for 1949 was presented by Mrs. MacFar- lane, as convener of the nominating committee. The meeting of January 10th will be directed by Mrs. Warriner and Mrs, A, Spears. ~~ A fine program of interest- ing numbers was then presented, con- sisting of viplin selections by Mr. W. J. Beacock, accompanied by Mrs. War- riner for his 9-year old daughter Corinne, plus Jimmy Davidson with Miss Helen Hayes sang a fine solo "Bluebird of Happiness" accompanied by Lois Jeffrey: count of the origin and composition of the music of the Christmas carol "Silent Night" by Franz Griiber, Mrs. Alex. Williamson sang "Loch Lomond" in her true Scottish style. Lucky prizes were won by Mrs, O, Watson for lucky chair, Wilma Owen the birthday prize, Lois Jeffrey,-a door prize of 1 Ib. bacon donated by Bert MacGregor, also a prize to Mr. John Murray for north of 'Bonnie Scotland'."
