The Scugog folk prepared a sur- prise party for Mr. Denton on Friday evening in Grace Church. The fol- lowing address was read: To Mr. H. Denton: Dear Mr. Denton, -- We recall a poem, which gives a beautiful picture of the way in which human lives come in contact and separate on the voyage of life. It was evening. Two sailing vessels, entered the same harbour and very closely, side by side, they cast anchaor. 'Soon the friendly sailors were climbing on and off their neigh- bor's vessel, singing their familiar songs, laughing at the well-known jokes and telling stories of places and people they had seen in distant lands. Kind words of encouragement : were spoken and friendships formed as though they were to remain in that harbour forever. But, in the. night a breeze sprang up, : i The sails were filled and when the sailors cante no deck at sunrise, their neighbor ship could be seen 'very dimly in the distance. Perhaps, in some other harbour, they might meet again but not time nor distance could erase the memory of the happy con- tact which they had made, : We believe that the ships, illustrate well our mutual relations, For, two years, we have worked together in the interests of our Church and commun- ity. As a congregation, we assure you, Harry, that we shall have very pleasant memories of your ready sym- pathy and understanding and of all your kindly ways. We enjoyed very much the presence and helpfulness of Mrs. Denton, your mother, while she was at the parsonage, and sincerely hope to see her in the future in our church services, and at the Woman's Association, 'to which she. added so much interest and enthusiasm, .The following lines were written in 1926 by an English girl--The title is. just Human Nature, AND HIGHER WAGES HAVE . : GREATLY INCREASED OUR COSTS doubled and our payroll IN THE PasT five years the" number of employees has dollars to over-50 million dollars. Yet, up to now, despite rising costs on all sides there has been no increase in the basic telephone rates established 22 years ago. 'To meet unprecedented postwar demand for more telephones, our expansion and improvement of service have of necessity taken place in a period: of rapidly rising . costs, Most businesses have offset their higher costs by higher prices for their products, We have not yet done so. ~~ You can be sure we will keep on doing our best to - provide you with adequate and constantly improving tele- + phone service -- and to provide it at the lowest rates con- sistent with a fair return to our investors, and employees. las gone up from 20 million | Od - ' (OH 2) : THE . As the tables were being prepared for supper it started to rain. Scarce- ly believing that it could actually rain we debated whether to stick to our seek refuge in the township hall. Ar- riving there we found the hall in read- iness for the election, and no tables available, so gathering up-our baskets for the second time, we journeyed to the Church. : ; sun came shining through." cluding ice cream and pop) the busi- elected for the following year were: Chandler; Games Con., Elmer Sweet- man; Press Reporter, Anne Milner. It was decided to hold the Reunion next year at the same place on the fourth Saturday in June. At this time a welcome was ex- tended to those who had not attended former picnics. A vote of thanks was moved to the Board of Grace United Church for the use of the basement. ' Novelty prizes were given to the eldest lady, Mrs. Martha Couch, the eldest gentleman, Mr. Geo. Mark; the youngest child; Bernard Chandler, the one having the nearest birthday, Mrs, Orval Boe; the nearest wedding an- niversary, Mr. and Mrs, Orval Boe. A full .program of sports was ear- |ried out in the school grounds, in- cluding running races, three-legged race, needle and thread, wheelbarrow, tug-of-war (Milner vs, Mark) which was very close, but with an eighth of a ton of fat and fun achored to the Milner end they won. Last but not least was the egg tlifowing contest which caused great merriment and several cleaning bills as the eggs were fresh, However, when the omelet was clearéd away, Bert Wanamaker (with Marjorie Milner as his partner) had one egg still unbroken for Sunday breakfast.
