Jacques, based on an address he gave at a meeting of the Port Pery Lions Club; on, Nov. 24th, 1949, Continued fiom last week. Should 1 leave my. child in Hospital? If facilities are adequate to assure vision is available, the patient may re- as hospital cases If signs indicating involvement of the spinal cord or re- spiratory muscles appear the patient Acute 'cases should not be allowed to walk or he taken to hospital by a com- mon carrier, but in an ambulance or private car. They should be trans- ported with great 'care in order not to traumatize his muscles; rg What will Hospitalization cost? Your Provincial Department _ ot Health have allotted certain hospitals throughout the Province of Ontario to care for Poliomyelitis patients, for which they pay the Hospitalization 'ransportation to and from these hospitals must be borne by the patient or his community: If wheel chairs and braces are neces- sary for the patient, he must bear the cost of same. Why Cannot I see my child while he is quarantined in Hospital? Most hospitals forbid it for the first two or three weeks, There are two pfincipal reasons -- First, to protect him from contracting other communic- able diseuses, when he has infantile paralysis. Remember, infantile pur' alysis, like any other discase, reduces resistance.to other infections, especial- ly during 'the acute phase, therefore, every effort is made to keep out every- one who may unwittingly bring: him, other infections. The second reason for barring visitors during thé -in- fectious period is to.prevent the pos- sibility of your cArrying the virus of Polio to people outside the hospital. 'When a patient becomes very erjt- ically ill, most hospitals do allow the What can I do for the patient * You can write your child a: warm, cheery, encouraging letter every day while he is in ISolation. The--nurse will read it to him, if-he is too young or too sick to do sq himself, This is one way to let your child know that you are interested in him, -love him and are waiting the-time when you can see him, He needs that assurance. Why is visiting restricted after the Isolation Period is over? Your child .and every other child in the hospital is receiving a maximum of medical treatment, such treatment cannot be given while visitors are present. That is why regular visit- ing hours are established. pr What should I bring my child, when I visit him? g First; bring your love and under- during the early stages. ¢ istic attitude toward the future, Give him confidence in himself. Leave your personal and domestic. problems at home. When-it comes to gifts, avoid bring- ing too much. One or two inexpensive A toys are often more appreciated than a truck-load of expensive ones.. Do not bring food or candy, unless in- structed to do so. Foods have to' be stored= in Ttefrigerators, and there is seldom Foom for such "extras." Fur- thermore, the patient's "diet is based on what, he needs. «Overweight is {iv something that must be guarded 3 against 'in a: patient whose museclds cannot stand any extra strain." : What is the treatment of Poliomyelitis? It is not the purpose of this article to discuss in detail the treatment of Polio. 1 shall merely mention some | of the important features. . There is as-yet no specific treatment for Polio. No drug will-destroy the virus or prevent its spread in the body. : (A) The non-paralytic case (the most common type) with fever should be confiried to-bed 4-5 days after tenis perature returns to normal. It is important to protect such patients from exertion, trauma or any meddle- sonie therapy. They--rarely require any special treatment," but should be under the watchful eye of their Doe- tor for any muscle weakness. If the patient remains at home the parent should be instruted in a certain amount. of isolation technique in the care of the patient, and the disinfec- tion of articles soiled with nose and 'throat discharges. (3) Paralytic case. HospReiiation is advised, but care should 'be taken that the trip to hospital be made with a minimum of-exertion to the-patient, over exertion - and trauma to the muscles at this stage is suicidal. I~ Complete bed-rest and good nursing- care with adequate bowel and bladder function are essential 'in treatment Early determination of the extent and degree of paralysis should be made..
