HUMPHREYS, K. C. _ 6 Simcoe Street North, Oshawa, ~~ _ Phone 814 - } Shot Gun 'Hygiene' If you want top performance from your shotshells this and every fall, keep your shotgun in good condition. That's' the ad- vice of gun experts in C-I-L's am- munition division. Important points to" consider, they say, are cleaning and storing. A dirty shotgun will kick your aim off centre and interfere with the true flight of the pellets, < Im- proper storage of "your shotgun during the off season may ledd to corrosion of the barrel, and make - the gun much harder to keep clean during the shooting season. Before the hunting season op- ens, shotguns should be thorough- ly cleaned with gun oil, using a cleaning rod or pull-through in- side the barrel. This should be repeated after duck hunting in the marshes to guard against the effect of any moisture that may have been picked up. Occasionally a gun will "lead up" in use, with gray streaks of lead being visible at the forcing cone just ahead of the chamber, and at the choke where the barrel is constrieted. This lead can be removed with ordinary mercuric ointment -which should be applied to the affected parts and allowed to stand for 24 hours. After the ointment has been removed, the gun should be thoroughly cleaned again®with gun oil. In preparation for storage dur- ing the off-season, the gun should 'be cleaned, then liberally greased with petroleum jelly. During this cleaning and greasing, plenty | of rags should be used and care taken that the fingers do not touch the metal, as body acids can start corrosion which will carry on un- der the grease.- Guns should always be stored in a clean, cool, dry place. They should not be stored in leather cases as these tend to attract moisture, and should never be stored with théir barrels plugged. Air should be allowed to circulate freely. - PI = Clhisess to Balance the Budget Since the month of October has been designated National Cheese 'sent level, will also be helpful in keeping tains | and can be obtained by writing for. many housewives to try new types of cheese and new ways of using cheese in the menu. This | statement comes from Miss Mar- garet Meyer, Supervisor of Nutri- tion for the Women's Institute Branch of the Ontario Department of Agriculture. Miss Meyer adds that with food costs at their pre- the increased use of cheese can be very. helpful in bal- ancing the budget and at the sam time providing "the family with good, tasty, nutritious meals. To 'back up this rather: broad statement, she points out that a 2 ounce serving of cheese may he used in place of a serving of meat, fish or 2 eggs, in obtaining the necessary amount of protein in a, meal. In addition, cheese, which is made from whole milk, provides a fair source of Vitamin A. Strangely enough, the Canadian consumption of cheese is rather low. -On a per capita basis it is placed at only about 4%: pounds per year, just a little _over half that of the American people" At the same time, Canadian Cheddar Cheese has the reputation of being the best produced in the world. Miss Meyer feels that if Canada's [Food Rules, calling for the serv- ing of cheese at least three times per week, were followed, Cana- dian consumption would increase substantially. She adds that the production of cheese has been broadened con- siderably with the result that there are now many types of Can- adian cheese available. Indeed, it might be said there is a cheese type to'suit practically any taste included in the natural and pro- cessed cheese now on the market. Since the increased use of cheese down the cost of a well-balanced diet, this gives a further strong argument for using more of this important dairy product. Miss Meyer points. out that there are many ways in which cheese can be used, and if house- wives are looking for new ideas and recipes, she suggests they obtain a copy of the booklet "Sup- per Dishes". This booklet con- numerous recipes for the use of cheese in the main course to the Statistics and Publications| Branch, Ontario Department of Agriculture, Parliamgnt Buildings Toronto, Ontario. KING _ AGENT Port Perry - Ontario Pass Resolution OFFICIAL BOARD PASS RESOLUTION The Greenbank United Church Of ficial Board unanimously passed the following: ) As officials of the Church in our community, in view of the forthcoming vote in Port Perry to permit the estab- lishment of a Brewers Warehouse, we wish to express what we believe to be the general feeling of our community. We feel the vote is an endeavour to get the thin edge of the wedge into our neighbouring town to eventually split it wide open so we are wholeheartedly against the proposition. We are close enough to Port Perry that a great deal of patronage naturally goes there, and all our children attending High School climb into the school bus for We as parents do not want any opening that is 'going to make it easiér for our boys and girls to acquire '|a taste or habit that in later years they will sorely regret the drink habit. "In business we enjoy coming to a town which is sober, and we, want to be able to continue to come to a place 'which gays "no booze". We want Port Perry to maintain its present stand. od Jod 74 ITIL shan ieio EF. W. 'Brock & Son _ PORT PERRY: - FESO 000000000000 0001 13 M ST.
