Society Canadian Cancer Society; Ont- ario County, South, in this sec- tion is sponsored by the Scugog Chapter, LO.D.E, "Your donations will be accepted by Mrs. M. B. Dy- mond or Mrs. Arthur Brock. First in a series of 'articles on this subject. What is the Canadian Cancer Society? ~ The Canadian Cancer Society is a national organization of volun- teer workers with provincial groups in all of the tén provinces, The Ontario Division of the So- ciety has twenty-six county units which are administered by a de- mocratically elected board of di- rectors representing all of the units. "It maintains a head office at 191 College Street in Toronto through which the efforts of the units are co-ordinated in the fight against cancer. 2 How was it Started? (a) In 1932 the Canadian Medi- cal Association set up a medical committee on cancer which in 1987 recommended the organization of a lay sociéty to help combat cancer mortality by creating public awareness of the effectiveness of carly and adequate treatment. It was evident from their experience at that time that many lives could be saved. ~ _ (b) In 1936 a Jubilee Fund for Cancer was created through public subcription to commenorate the 26th Jubilee of King George V. The money raised for this fund was held in trust by the Canadian Government and the yearly inter- est wag used with the approval of the Canadian Medical Association to establish the Canadian Cancer Society. : Why was it Started? The great need for publie edu- cation (See 2a) was recognized by the medical profession. The So- ciety in .Ontario has established information. centres or "Little Red Doors" where a nurse or social worker is always in attendance. Through its units it arranges for qualified "men to Speak about cancer. It provides films which are shown all over the province. It arranges for radio talks and has published reports and articles on cancer in newspapers and per- iodicals. It distributes many kinds of lit- erature by mail and also'by hand at fall fairs and exhibitions aH over the province. Actually, the activities have ex- tended far beyond the hopes of its founders. GERROW ae - | Lakoview Theatre, Port Perry, Ont. | It not only carries on this im- portant programme of public edu- cation and its campaign for funds, but it is finding more and more ways of doing needed service work for cancer sufferers. What is the Ontario Cancer Treatment and Research . Foundation? In accordance with the British North America Act, the treatment of disease is a provincial responsi- bility. The Ontario Cancer Treat- ment and Research Foundation was established in 1943 by special provincial legislation. Nine clinics are now in operation and are available to all physicians in Ont- ario-- In 1950 it was agreed that the Society would be the official fund-raising body for the Founda- tion in Ontario. + The Ontario Cancer Treatment and Research Foundation (which ig concerned directly with the di- agnosis and treatment of cancer in clinics throughout Ontario) is sus- tained mainly by grants from the Ontario and Federal governments, but 'requires additional funds to develop its programme. 'This vear the Society will again endea- vour to raise $200,000 for the es- sential work of E he Ontario Found- ation. In addition, the Foundation is concerned with the development of new techniques and methods (e.g., the new radioactive isotopes, as well as the Cobalt Bomb, which are being developed from Canada's atomic research programme). It also carries on valuable clinical research by compiling a detailed record of cancer patients treated, methods used, and results achiev- ed. It assesses new techniques which are being used. Does the Medical Profession Approve the Work of the Society? Yes. In the fight against can- cer the Society has several defin- ite jobs to do--education, service, welfare and fund-raising. The Society seeks the advice of the me- dical profession in all of these en- deavours and maintains a contin- ual liaison with the Canadian Me- dical Association. (Central Ontario District).
