History of 8.8. No. 1, or Archers School, Cartwright, and Brief account of the Life of Australia Burney " MacBrien continued. In those days grown men attended the school in the winter and worked during the other months. It has been thought by some and no doubt, very often, by the teacher in charge, that their atendance was more for the fun of it and making it interesting for the "Master", as he was called, ra- ther than because of any thirst for knowledge. "One prank .nmong the many in this school, so I was told, not being there, was to grind, into a fine powder some of the plaster content, which was plastered hetween the logs of the building. This was a secret proceedure among the hoys and at a given "sign, they, with -one accord would blow the powder into the air "eausing sneezing, coughing, and much discomfort to the eyes, throat and . nose and a certain amount of disorder. I can see how it would not improve the temper and patience of the teach- er. Mr. MacBrien could hold his © grround quite ably whenever his pupils would become troublesonie by their well thought out schemes nnd he would tell them, quite emphatieally-- "1 will he obeyed: if you were as tall as the stove pipes and stout ageord- ingly". i It was his joy and pleasure to coach ___the_ studious pupils who had had an "ambition and goal in lif¢. and he 'HISTORY OF ARCHER'S SCHOOL would spare no pains to Help "such youths. The late Dr. David Archer was one who benefitted from 'Master' MacBrien's extra work with him--for work it was in those days. During the winter months, blacks of wood were pressed into service, to seat the overflow of pupils. Those who came regularly had their own places on benches which were used for the seating accomadation. The others had to take pot luck, which meant they had to make themselves as comfortable as possible on the hard blocks of wood, which were originally intended to he used in the box stove for heating purposes. One can under- eli ud how the. spirit of dailment might creep into the heads of those perched on blocks of hard wood and I under- stand the desks were along the sides of the building rather a drab outlook to say the least. Sometimes, quite often in fact, the boys who came to the school in the winter, made of girls attending in this way) were as tall as the school master and sported moustaches. - This is as it was told to me, and I have wondered why they 'confined: themselves to moustaches alone, why not beards? In those days the salaries were very small "indeed, and were sometimes augmented by the privilege of stay- _inginturn-with the different families i in the section. He also had the priv- spasmodically and whénever #1 suited their fancy (no mention was. ilege of acting as janitor--cleaning the school daily. and "tending" (look- ing after the fires). , Corporal punishment was much in evidence, Hardwood pointers were often broken over the offenders and 'the cat of nine tails was used when needed and no doubt, often, when not needed, So thought a certain lad (no name mentioned) when he was "up on the carpet", and his "teacher was all set to strap him. This boy had the gumption to refuse to co- operate. He evidentally thought that he had had enough on previous aceca- 'sions and said, he meant it too;--"I didn't come to school to "larn" (learn) ignorance, I can "lari" that at honte", Epsom Miss~M.
