It has been ovel crowded for a long time, but mow it is practi: "| eally overflowing. While the city grows and grows the hospital stays the sanie and the situa. tion becomes more and more acute. At present -the .General Hospital has 26 per cent more patients than it should have. This year it has had an average | of nine patients a day more than last year, There was ne reason to believe the increase in patients would be less in|' 1964, Superintendent H., Holland said. The rated capacity of the hospital is 197 beds for adults and children and 38 bassinettep for babies, a total of 286. But so great is the demand, the hospital normally sets up 43 more beds than this; 227 for adults and children and 61 for babies. Recently even that Hmi was tend: ed, The number of patients in the hospital was 294, 284 adults and chil- dren and 60 babies, That represents a total of 69 more patients than the hospital js adjudged capable of hand- ling. At present therefore it is operating at 125 per cent capacity. The hospital is able to meet part of the extra demand by converting pri- vate rooms into two-bed rooms and by converting two-bed rooms. into. three- bed rooms and.by using the corridors.
