Road Condition Reports Information about conditions affect- ing traffic on all provincial highways for the cywrrent winter is now avail- able by telephone for 24 hours each fices in Toronto, and at 21 other cen- tres operated in or near Department of Highways divisional headquarters throughout Ontario." Telephone num- bers for the various information cen- tres are listed at the end of this press | release, In addition to information given to individuals who call by telephone or in pergon, the Ontario Department of Highways Road Information Service ports from all parts of the province three times each day to the Ontario Motor League, and once a day to Can- adian Press for distribution to mem- ber newspapers and subscribing radio stations throughout Central -Canada. Information passed on to the Ont- ario Motor League at Toronto is trans- mitted by that organization, on a ser- vice exchange basis, with the Ameri- can Automobile Association at Buf- falo, New York. Zz In division centres throughout Ont- ario, information also is given to local newspapers and radio stations if de- sired. This year, the headquarters road information offices in the East Block of Ontario's Parliament Buildings are linked by telephone with every divi- sion head office in Ontario, including five in Northern Qntario. Several of the Southern Ontario di- visions, where traffic is heaviest, have two-way radio telephone service from division offices to major automotive units employed in winter maintenance on highways, such as snow plows, sanding trucks and patrol vehicles. Road information service for the winter of 1954-56 was started on a continuous round-the-clock basis on November 1, and! it will be in opera- tion until about 'April 15, 1965. Following. the flood disaster in the Toronto area the night of Friday, October 16, emergency road informa- tion service went into effect for 24 hours daily on October 16.. Due to swift restoration of normal or nearly normal traffic on affected highways, the service was cut to 18 hours a day on October 26. Five days later, the regular winter service began on a 3 shift basis daily.
