Damage to date has "not been extensive although individual fields have been fairly severely dam- aged. All farmers should be on the look-out for this pest. These aphids are small, soft bodied insects and are sometimes called plant lice. They have sucking mouth. parts and the damage to the plant results from the withdrawal of plant juices. Excellent control has been obtained by using 209% malathion emulsion at the rate of 3 pints ih 10 gallons of water per acre. A 50% malathion emulsion may also be used, in which case 1 pint in 10 gallons of water is recommended. When using weed sprayers to apply this insecticide, the emulsion type must bé used whereas with the high pressure-hugh volume row crop spray- er either the_emulsion or a 26% wets sprayers should be carefully cleaned before use, . All farmers should check both their fall wheat and spring grain for the presence of this pest. If the popula- tion of aphids is fairly high then the spray should be applied. If a-severe out-break occurs, contact: your local Agricultural Representative.
