District Churches Manchester and Prospect United Churches The Cubs met in the Manchester Hall last Wednesday evening. There was a very good representation of the Parents to witness the initiation of the boys into '(cubbing". The leaders of the four sixes had already been initiated in Port Perry. The boys re- peated the Cub Law, and the Promise, and were welcomed into the Cub Pack by their Akela (Jack Witherspoon). Rev. J. K. Braham offered a prayer, and placed their scarf on each boy. Allca Maruyn presented them --with their badges. Everything was very well arranged, and everyone was treated to strawberries and ice cream. The boys will leave for a trip to Hal- iburton on Sunday afternoon, leaving Manchester at 1.00 p.m. All meetings for the summer are cancelled. A word of thanks to our Cub leaders, and to Scugog, -| the parents who have driven the boys to and from their Cub Meetings all winter and spring. The Services on Sunday were con- ducted hy the Young People. There was a very good response at all three Churches. At Scugog "Grace" Betty Reader was in charge, and was assist- ed by YvonneAppleton, Donna Collins and Ruth Braham who gave the address. Ruth's theme was "The way of love". Bonnie Jeffrey and Gayle Mark sang "Softly and tenderly". A number of the Young People were in the Choir. Bill Nixon and Roy Pogue took up the offering. The two baskets of flowers from the Murray McLarens were very lovely. There were many Summer Guests, amongst whom were the Savilles and the Logans from Tor- onto, Marjorie Cornish and Lynda Hatfield of Oshawa. We give a cordial invitation to all who summer on the Island to come and worship with us at 11.16 a.m. cach Sunday morning. At Prospect Helen Holtby was in charge of the service. Erika Benschop read the scripture and led in the child- ren's Prayer; Margaret Dearborn told the story; Olive Painter offered the Prayer; the Choir of Young People sang "Tell me the old old story", with 'Joanne Mosienko at the piano, and Mr. McCartney gave the sermon. At Man- chester there was a good congregation and Mr, McCarney took the service, assisted by Wesley Johnson, with Mina Steer at the piano. We say "Thank you" to everyone who helped. Everything will be in readiness for our Daily Vacation Bible School at the Centre of the Island on Monday at 9.00 A.M. There will be in the neigh- bourhood of thirty cars a day coming and going. There is a very keen inter- est being shown, and we know that much good will result from the school. The children from four to six will go to the Public School. The Primary children (seven to nine) will go to the Hall, and the Juniors (ten to twelve) will go to the church. There is an ad- equate Staff of Teachers of each dept. The worship each morning for the Juniors will be conducted by the Min- ister. Catherine Martyn and her Staff will look after the Arts and Crafts, and Ethyl Redman and her staff will care for the music. The Church gro- unds are being put into shape for many happy hours of games. We know that you will have a lovely time boys and girls, so come and bring your friends. Two of our oldest residents of the Island were laid to rest last week, Mrs. Frank Gerrow on Friday, and Mrs. Jackson on Saturday. Our deep- est sympathy go out to Anson, Donald and Bonnie; and also to Edna McLaren * ' Edna Beckett and George Samells and relatives. Rev, Braham conducted the Service at the Parlors on Friday, and Rev. Wylie on Satuday. Our whole Pastoral Charge regrets the leaving of Rev. Many happy returns to the follow- ing members of our Birthday Club: Jimmie Ashbridge, Dianne Fralick, Kaye Jackson, Linda Fralick, Joanne Martyn (Island); and Donovan Smith (Prospect), We give you all a cordial invitation'to come and worship with us on Sunday. Please note that there will be NO EVENING SERVICE at Scugog "Head" for July and August. Prince Albert A splendid size concregation turned out to church Sunday morning and were privileged to hear a fitting mes- sage pertaining to "Dominion Day", delivered by Rev. R. H., Wylie. He also announced the appreciation of an attendance plaque given by Mr. and Mrs. R. Butson. A dedication service is being arranged for this useful gift in the very near future. Larger attendance roll at Sunday School, too. Mrs. E. Martyn read a patriotic story to the children prior to Canada's birthday. Congratulations and happiness to Mr. and Mrs. D. Southwell (nee Carol Heayn) whose marriage took place in our church Saturday. Couples from our village who were guests at the Southwell-Heayn wed- ding included Mr. and Mrs, E. McCrea, Mr. and Mrs. R. Butson, Mr, and Mrs. Perkins, Mr. and Mrs, E. Williams and Mr. and Mrs, Wm. Heayn. Last Wednesday night a large group of village and rural friends made their way to the church parlors. Joy Newn- ham and Aleta Doupe planned a show- er for the purpose of a welcome in honour of Mr. and Mrs. Robinson and four children who had just stepped from the boat, leaving their home-land in England. Mr. Earl Martyn acted as master of ceremonies therefore started with a few well chosen remarks, then a brief program: A list of sing-song, Eva Hunter at the piano, a suitable réading "Gift Givers by Grace Beacock; a com- ical T. contest by Myrtle Snelgrove, followed by a piano-violin combination by Myrtle and Bruce Snelgrove. A humerous reading, "Mosquitto" by Florence Smith, . At this time the chairman stafed the "why" of the occasion and requested Ilene-Ginger family (as we all call them) to come to the front and occupy the chosen seats, after which Earl ask- ed Mr. Wylie for a word or two who in friendly terms, admired the Godly community act that had been arranged also sincerely welcoming the new fam- ily. All of a sudden a curtain was drawn, the Robinsons were then intro- duced to a long table laden with liberal supply of fruit, groceries, pillows, blankets, set of dishes plus many more useful helps. Ginger in a surprise mood expressed his appreciation on behalf of the rest grateful feelings to all who had proven kind and gener- ous. Singing "Blest Be the Tide that Binds" closed this portion of the even- ing. Everyone enjoyed looking at the gifts after which loads of lunch and coffee was devoured hefore the good- bye. Then Thursday brought along the school picnic, upper and lower rooms combined with Shirley pupils travelled to Geneva Park by chartered bus, The bathing was grand. A long table proved space for salads, sandwiches, and all the rest of the good food which shortly disappeared by noon-hour. The teacher handed every pupil an ice- cream cone. The mothers were in on that special treat, too. Finally a few drops of rain, pouring and home after a pleasant outing in spite of dampish skies. } During the week-end the weather man picked a rough weather recipe for us all. Miss Beth Hunter spent a short holi- day with her cousin Miss Nola Hunter of down town. Mr. and Mrs. R., McInerney, of Brampton were in our village on Sun- day, renewing old acquaintances, The latter was the former Tillie Crandell who spent her girlhood days here sev- eral years ago. Mrs. A. Bond and two daughters, and son Leonard, Toronto, visited re- latives here on Sunday, Visitors of Miss Spence and Mrs. Smith last week were Mr, and Mrs. Bert Spence, Lansing, Mich, Mrs. Hugh McColl, "Toronto, and Mrs Geo. This was the last meeting of the season, and it was men- tioned that this was the month of the Sacred Heart. Mrs, Ed. Donnelly donated a lovely statue of the Blessed Virgin and it was decided that we would have a tea and bake sale in July. Some of the ladies attended the C. W. L. Film Council At the Annual Meeting of the Ontario and York Counties' Film Council held some weeks ago in Brook- lin, it was decided to decentralize con- trol of the film council and to operate as three independent units, namely Markham, Claremont and Port Perry branches, . Each library received one projector and the screens were divided between the three units. The funds of the film council were divided according to fees received during 1957 in each district. Markham branch received $120.51, Claremont $76.45, while Port Perry got $69.76. In addition, Claremont library paid to Port Perry an extra $25.00 for extra equipment value. The libraries will continue to be managed by the same film librarians, Mr. Frank Baker, secretary-treasurer of the Port Perry branch, and Mrs. Allen Martyn, president. Claremont Iibrary will be under the direction of Mrs. C. Keevil and Miss Mildred Lin- ton, treasurer. while Markham will be supervised by the Federation of Agriculture under the management of Mr. Fred Wicks. dys We, wish these film libraries con- tinued success and feel sure that they will operate more efficiently under their new set-up.
