Captain' Jens Munk landed on the west coast of Hudson Bay in 1619, while trying to find the North West Passage to China. He occupied the country; spending the winter there, and he called the country Nova Dania in the name of King Christian IV of Denmark. His camp was probably" located' where Churchill, Manitoba, now stands, Unfortunately the ex- pedition ended in tragedy. SCIENCE IN YOUR: LIFE Caught In The Draft The cold season is coming, but fey drafts may have no direct con- nection with the sniffles, sneezes and hoarseness that are common signs of winter weather. Recent studies in England suggest cold weather helps spread such ail- ments mostly because people hud- dle together in crowded buses and trains. Crowding during winter is dif- cult - to avoid, and so are the ills that often follow. Once you catch cold you might as well resign your- self to a couple of weeks of nurs- ing your symp- toms. A scientist at Johns Hopkins University has develoved a vac- cine which appears to be effective in preventing one type. of cold virus from causing trouble. But so far as a cure is concerned, medical science can't do a thing. The best thing anyone can do is "try to case the annoying symp- toms. Cutting down on smoking is sensible, and it's a good idea to take in plenty of fluids such as fruit juices at the first sign of a sniflle or sneeze. Mild nose drops and aspirin will help tide you over, too.. Candettes -- antibiotic loz- _enges sold at drug counters -- will help ease a scratchy throat, If a sore threat persists, be sure to sce your doctor at once. A ser- . ious throat infection mav not stop there; so don't trifle with it. And if it is possible for you to aveid erowds, give it a trial. You may manage to go the whole sea- son without a single cough ovr sniffle! Jobless Workers Cause Heavy Draw On Fund Canada's army of jobless workers has caused the heaviest drain on this country's Unemployment Insurance Fund since it was established 17 yrs. ago. But the fund remains healthy. Unemployment of the last winter, worst since the depression days of the 1930's, siphoned off some $144,- 000,000 between Dec, 1, when the fund ORONO ONTOS OS IIOSOROOSOSCN Excelon Vinyl Tile, 18c. each Linoleum Tile Special Purchase 10c. each POPOV OPOPOP started its usual winter decline, and March 31. However, the unemployment insur- ance commission reports that at the end of March the fund still totalled $743,600,000. This compares with a record total of $926,000,000 at the end of 1966. Officials said the drop of about $182,500,000 in the last 15 months is no cause for immediate concern. The fund is expected to start growing again with the advent of normal heavy summer employment. The heavier-than-usual outlay from the fund--financed by employee, em- ployer and government contributions --was caused not only by the greater number unemployed, who totalled an estimated record of 590,000 in mid- March, but also by other considera- tions. Extension of the period during which seasonal benefits are paid and the payment of benefits to fishermen, ORR OROSOROROROL OROSOR OR OSCR ORCROR OR OR OS OSOR OROROR Og started last autumn, also contribu- ted, although the commission is un- able to say just how much. The seasonal or supplementary win- ter benefits previously were paid from Jan. 1 to April 15. As of this year, they are paid between Dec. 1 and May 16. There are reports that the period may be extended beyond May 15 at the next session of parliament. During December, income amount- ed to $21,900,000 compared with paid benefits of $32,000,000. In January, income was $22,300,000 and outlays $60,700,000; in February about $19,- 000,000 and $63,300,000; in March, $21,300,000 and $72,350,000. The March deficit of some $51,000,- 000 was the highest on record, Benefits to the unemployed who qualify range from a minimum of $6 a week for a single worker to a maximum of $30 for a married work- or.
