TNA Mrs. Jessie Gardiner and Miss Mari- lyn Luke are attending the Hair Dressers Conference at the Royal York in Toronto this week, This and That By Soiben Twackle I conceived that it was not beyond the bounds of possibility that my column would be received with compli-- ats or criticism but I had no idea {that there would be such ardent sup- port and fiendish--in some cases-- fanatical attacks on my efforts. In the first place, the choice of news. paper for my column was influenced by circulation and fairness of editorial opinion. I knew of local circulation but it would appear that, as well as local distribution, the Port Perry Star is forwarded to many distant places. Letters have been received from Hal- fax - Toronto - North Bay - Calgary - Gaspe and Vancouver Island, Because of the volume of mail, is not possible to answer all sony 80 I will deal with a few 'selected at random, Obviously, the mind works in a mysterious manner. The contents of my column have been constructed as humorous, factual, fictional, imag- inative and downright blasphemous. My best recourse is to deal with the various points in order, so below are observations in the order of continuity. One Eyed Monster -- One mature lady of local residence wants to know what action the local authorities 'are taking to rid Lake Scugog of this monster, Wag the monster similar to the noted Loch Ness creature? Was ft a danger to boaters and swimmers? Madam -- T 'was refering to motor Scugog. On 'my beef oi, the Honing of headlights ~-- one French-Canadian from the Gaspe hastens to tell me that he could never get the headlights in .J in grants from the provineial govern- his 1987 car to produce any volume of light at all. Since 1987, he has re placed his battery 57 times and fit was only during a recent oil'change that it was discovered that he had no generator. He suggests that | look | also, Sir----- my point was that many | motorists do not dim their headlights for an approaching car. I do not at the moment have generator trouble. A writer from Calgary recommends a certain well known tonic to help me overcome my lack of courage. Sir -- will try this tonic, wi advise later if | 1 dared. . A A lady from Halifax accuses me of | being an agnostic--heretic--atheist | and other things. Madam -- you have a small mind, A local man has contacted me and offers to allow me to park on his | driveway. Sir, "I do have parking" facilities -- I even have a garage. In my column I referred to the fact that heresay has it that some local resid- ents recently had legal parking prob- lems. On the matter of a Canadian flag, letters from various parts of the province accuse me of being Comm- unist - C.C.F. - Liberal - Conservative and New Party. All I said was that the powers that be should make up their minds. Decisions are necessary on matters more major than a flag. If the choice of a flag cannot be de- cided upon, what chance for firm and lasting resolutions on matters of REAL importance. Re Grandfather and his teeth. An elderly man from Vancouver writes to say that his dentures always drop out when he chews treacle toffee and suggests that the Grandfather refer- red to in my column ceases to eat sticky confectionery. - Sir--I was re- ferring to the absence of Grandfa- ther's molars. -- not the location of them. . From Welland comes a request that the writer be forwarded part of the fortune that Arthur Godfrey has be- queathed to me.--Sir, I.do not know the gentleman and have not inherited his fortune. Concerning my remarks concerning Boom policy and sensationalism. Vari- ous editors suggest I keep my mouth shut. ~ They need circulation, From Orillia comes a letter to ask who is Rick. Madam--Rick Cambell is the M.C. of the 11. p.m.-show-pro- duced on the channel which trans- mits television as it ought to be. You should sit in on this show. Some- times. This channel might be im- proved if the commercials were not constantly interupted by extracts from various shows. IFrom 3 U.S, television corporations comes the news that of the 3021 in- Jured performers, collectively 973 are now out of danger and will shortly be released from hospital. Am glad to hear this. A gentleman from St. Thomas com- pliments the Lions Clubs on their ef- forts. Says all service clubs' are worthy of public support. Sir-Thank you. I am accused of being an achoholic. Of the 123 letters received on this subject 87% of the writers agree with this commodity as, if and when they please. Without fear, favour or re- striction. Of the remaining 13%, two letters I cannot decipher and of the balance, all the letters are in favour of my being deported. Incidentally, 10% of this remaining balance of letters appear to be from Jeckyl and Hyde characters, who have not the get their neighbours to purchase this commodity for them, at the same time publicly professing their abhorence of the whole matter, No further comment, - Some rea e may be confused by the foregoing.
