ONTARIO RIDING Repeal of the 7% percent excise tax on automobiles has been greeted with enthusiasm across Canada, Announcement of this action by the Minister of Finance on Budget Night brought a storm of applause from all sides of the House. . The immediate effect will be an average reduction of from $180 to $240 in the price. of Canadian-made cars, This will provide a needed shot in the arm to automobile sales all across the country and will cut down the " importation of foreign-made cars. | 'Repeal of the tax was recommended in the report of the Royal Commission on the Automotive industry. This Commission was set up by the Government at the request of both la- bour and management representatives "of the automobile industry and' was tabled by the Minister of Finance on Budget Night. The other far-reach- | ing recommendations contained in the | report are now being studied. Another welcome announcement by the Minister of Finance was tothe effect that a refund of tax already paid would. be made to dealers and distributors with respect to new cars in stock, Car manufacturers and dealers were reported by the press as being "sur- prised and delighted" with the repeal of the tax. As a result of the measure, a sub- stantial reduction will be effected, to the advantage of the consumer. Ac- cording to manufacturers and dealers this will bring about an increase in sales and a consequent increase in employment. Another announcement in the Bud- get of interest to labour "in general was thetstatement that the Federal Government would seek the co-opera" tion of the provinces in undertaking measures to bring in portable pensions. In view of the various areas of "jurisdiction, this can only 'be "done through Federal-Provincial co-opera- tion, and the announcement by the Minister of Finance was an indication that the Federal Government was now prepared to move in this direction This is a step that has been urged by labour for many years. ---- The Report of the Special Commit- | tee of the Senate on Manpower and Employment was tabled this week. The Committee issued a 100-page mimeographed report which was im- mediately snapped up, so arrange- ments had to be made for a special printing. "The Committee held meetings over a period of almost a year and heard dozens of witnesses; all prominent in business, labour and government. It is ely to be a source of au- reference on Canada's -} economic probjems for some _time to come, The Report referred with approval to measures being taken by the Fed- eral Government to stimulate the fight against seasonal unemployment, including in particular the municipal winter works program, now complet- ing its third year. In this connection, I might mention that in the three years it has been i operation this program has launched public works in some 2,000 Canadian municipalities of a total cost of $490,- 000,000. This winter some 217,000 jobs were provided on-site and an equal number off-site. : --X-- p: The Minister of Labour from Ni- geria was in Ottawa this week and I "had the pleasure of having dinner with |. Mr. J. N. Johnson is 'a big man, an impressive figure in| the traditional gaily coloured Niger- ian garb which he and his party wore during their stay in Ottawa. He has recently been in Geneva at the International Labour Conférence and went on to Washington after, leav- ing Ottawa. Letter fo the Editor We have recently had some letters to the Editor which merit some con- sideration. 'One letter was in refer- ence to the editorial "Crime Pays", advocating more religiuos training in the home to counteract crime. Un- fortunately the letter is quite lengthy and we publish only a portion of it. Another letter complained, unfort- unately in an abusive manner, regard- ing the way the Port Pery Police have handled the traffic problem at the lakefront. : Both letter had an idea to bring to "| your attention, To the Port Perry Star, Gentlemen, Your editorial "Crime Pays" shows up human nature, for crime and payment of crime are part of human nature. It belongs to us all in the sense that when it occurs in our | § midst those who carry on these things @ are part of our own society, our own |g people and perhaps even our own cit- 5 izens, those participating. The need to win, to dominate, to gain, to be someone, | & takes this way out as an easy or only | § way, And the education. of those par- i ticipating inevitably comes from the |g teachers 4 mother, (first )father and that the growing person admires, - 23 There is only one cure for crime, for since crime comes by education to | commit crime for gain and a place in |§ society it 'can only be opposed by an education to be selfless for society. Your answer to your own editorial | is Christian education; my answer to Christian Education is simply Bible reading! Have an open bible on a table in 'your:home wheré all may-see: { Each week have. a list of readings ready; have your clergy select these. ...more detailed instructions follow but the foregoing gives you the gen- eral idea of the writer.
