Notes and Comments Current Issues The Diefenbaker government has sud- denly come to life and finds itself con- fronted with some real issues. Lod The Courtemanche affair is still in a "process of developing and as-yet the Prime Minister has not had to take any _ action, However, the evidence so far produced seems to indicate that action cannot be long delayed. The disclosures of the shameful financial dealings of the Union Nationale politicians is bound to involve the Conservative Federal Party soon or late. Courtemanche is probably only the first of many to follow. Another issue has to do with the C.N.R. and its President Gordon. That this man was permitted to get away with the state- ment that if they fired him the C.N.R. would crumble is fantastic. Any man who believes or publicly states that the enter- prise which he heads would crumble with- out him is a menace to the organization. School's Out This - week- school gets -out. public school the teachers are busy wind- ing up the year's business. The puri' are waiting impatiently for the last da, . Many of them, the older ones, are envious of their brothers and . sisters in high school for they are out already. But their envy may be misplaced. The standards in high school are being steadily upped. been put on the universities that they have had to stiffen entrance requirements ~in all-courses. -It used to-be-that a pass- ing mark of fifty was good enough. As long as a pupil could keep above this he was all right. But to-day high school marks between fifty and sixty don't mean a thing. If a high school student is to be successful he's got to shift his sights "In the - 'So much pressure has - q This is sheer monomania. Gordon is a forceful man.and no doubt he has done many good things for the C.N.R. But the moment he begins to regard himself as indispensable is. the very time we should get rid of him, Another issue centres around the Cent- ral Bank and the firing of Coyne. The Cabinet is committed to inflationary me- thods in a belated attempt to curb unem- ployment. Coyne believes that such a policy is fraught with pitfalls and he is probably right. However, the government is in a position where they cannot afford to allow unemployment to get any worse and they are determined to follow some of the principles used by Roosevelt during ' the depression. The World Bank does not support such a programme and the question which. remains unanswered is, What are we going to do about inflation when it once more becomes a real menace to economic: development? ' Many parents are as yet quite unaware | of this changed situation with regard to secondary education. One of the first tasks of the school then is to make sure that parents of boys and girls entering high school realize that a high school graduation diploma with marks in the fifty to sixty range just means nothing as far as further education is concerned. Pupils are going to work harder and work longer hours if they are going to make their time at school count. Educators tell us that this means at least-two-hours-on-an average each night - for those in grade nine; two and a half hours for those in grade ten; three to three and a half hours in grade eleven; and up to four hours in grade twelve.
