CANADIAN WEEKLY NEWSPAPER ASSOCIATION MEMBER OF Make Preparations PORT PERRY PUBLIC SCHOOL A PROMOTION REPORT THE STAR EDITORIAL PAGE Cartwright Public School Promotions 'Notes and Comments - New Strategy for the Federal Government The - conservatives have taken steps towards straightening up Canada's money situation. The ordinary citizen has his own opinion about the matter but few of us in our secret hearts profess to the wisdom necessary to understand all the ramifications of the situation. The Prime Minister has wisely decided to call an early session of parliament. [It is right-that he should do so. [It puts the other parties on the spot. They will have to go along with "his austerity programme and become involved or repudiate it. If they go along with Mr. Deifenbaker the Conservatives will not be held solely responsible. If they do not they run all the hazards of antagonizi heir voting population in a rather unpi ictable fa- shion. 3 The opposition to say tlie least, would Canada's 100th Birthday Party is due in just five years. The Prime Minister has long been busy with great plans for this centennial. Upper Canada Village at Morrisburg has already attracted a good deal of attention. Port Perry and district could also take part in this celebration with a great deal of pride and pleasure. Port Perry is itself only a few years younger, having been incorporated as a separate municipality in January 1872, A great dea] of the history of these past hundred years has been recorded in the book, "On the Shores of Scugog'" written by the late Samuel Farmer, who was long time editor of this paper. Much valuable material historically will be found in old record books of the vari- ous municipalities. The County Council made a brief record of its history for the occasion of its centennial celebration a few years ago. Irom these sources and from cherished letters and heirlooms much in- teresting information could be gleaned. The Women's Institutes have done much to help preserve and record our history with their "Tweedsmuir Village History" books. The advent of the ni be accused of refusing to co-operate in straightening out our financial crisis, It the Prime Minister's plans should mature profitably the effects could be far- reaching on both prices and unemploy- ment. No one in his right senses wants a new cleetion. The cost of such an election would run into billions. We can have good government with the new parliament. Most experts will be very surprised if we don't. Canada is basically sound. We are fortunately and unfortunately part of a quickly changing world. None of us can predict future events accurately but barring a financial crisis in the States which is a real possi- bility, the minority Conservative Govern- ment could outshine the late majority government--and with a lot to spare. Celebrate Centennial vear of Confederation should spur them on to greater efforts. Many homes will have old relics, pictures and letters, tools for both the home and the land, which could be arranged in at- tractive displays. It would be of great benefit to those who will, no doubt, be appointed to arrange for these interest- ing exhibits as the important time draws near, if the householder of those possessions which he might lend for this purpose. It may seem ear]y to think of all these things, but tn be truly successful g great deal of planning will be néeded. Tt will be necessary to raise money for this purpose also. But-no spectacular results can he accomplished until we know what we have to work with, The Port Perry Star will be glad to as- sist in making a record of such jtems as may be of interest in this Historical event. The various branches of the Women's In- stitutes in the area wil] also be most in- terested in keeping track of the history in their area. Do co-operate hy making your own con- tributions. would take note: (Continued from Front Page) Moore, Linda Ptolemy, Clare.
