8 THE PORT PERRY STAR, THURSDAY, MARCH 21st, 1962 What Kind of Person is Norman Cafik By Donald G. Crossley You could describe him as a "whirl- "tireless competi- with idealistic wind organizer," a tor", and a "realist" fervor. These are all true, but they hardly crack the surface of Ontario ridings Liberal candidate in the April 8th There ure big promises and little results There are citizens who are being bribed with their own money. Election to power brings with it the moral responsibility to rule, to national election. Norman Cafik is the kind of man who can add something to our na- tional treasury of ideas in a time of bankruptcy in political morality. How does a government fail? Failure is compounded of some big leaders. and some little things. What kind of guy is Norm Cafik? for all of the people of this country. These are the truths of today that work on the mind of Norm Cafik, Liberal candidate. He asks for moral conduct from political serve, and act--openly Dowson's Food Market port perry New Spring - No. 1 CABBAGE TOMATOES Ontario Hothouse LRHUBAR® 1b. 8c Palm Garden - No. 1 - 14 oz. cel. tube Tempting, Flavourful Chiquita BANANAS 21s. 29° | Oregon Fancy J NJOU PEARS 6/39c Firm, Crisp, Ont. (His charm- ing wife Pat might contribute news in this family before the election is over). Norm was one of six children--five boys and a girl. The family experi. enced considerable financial stress after the death of it Ukrainian-Cana- dian father. Today, Norm and his brothers are successful business and professional men. Norm worked at odd jobs during his brief school career--helping on the Pickering farm, delivering groceries, shovelling snow. At 16, he left school and became apprenticed to the Ont- ario Tool and Die Co. in Whitby. He eevntually became a tool and die maker. At the John Inglis Co. Ltd. in Tor- onto, he advanced to process engin- eering work and took active part in union matters. Eventually he became president of a union association of draftsmen engineers. He was also active in credit union work. Always with a desire for education, Norm made a point of studying many subjects -- the classics, organization, finance, and, we should add, dog care. He owns two bulldogs today that greet guests to his West Rouge home in a quiet, sphinx-like amiability. Norm's interest in organization and finance resulted in his appointment as operations manager with the Tor- onto firm, Wells Ltd. He went on to form his own company, and today heads two firms specializing in finan- cial consulting & publishing services. He is widely travelled and lectures frequently on finance in England, the United States and Canada. That's quite a life for a 34-year-old former farm boy. His virtully one-man campaign in the last election--swept into the bal- lot boxes the highest number of votes for a Liberal candidate in the history of Ontario riding. He had 186,051, compared with the incumbent Michael Starr's 23,168. On the day before his nomination he was unknown ac- ross the riding. "I look at the June election of last year as the first installment of a story that will end in success for the Liberal party in our riding--and in the House of Commons," says Norm. Norm Cafik is, as we have attempt- ed to suggest, a man of many parts and ideals. All of these segments combine to form the accomplishment of a need -- for skillful, courageous, intelligent and really dedicated rep- resentatives. Not just nice guys. Visitors to Norm Cafik's home will see a competently executed oil paint ing, by the candiddte, on a wall in the recreation room. Close examina- tion reevals that Norm's technique consists of firm, sure, bréad strokes resulting in a meaningful picture of our Canada. That is what we wanted to say: Norm Cafik is a man who paints with a big brush. .
