Dance Recital Big Success On Saturday, June the 1st. a large crowd gathered at the Port Perry High School Auditorium. . where the pupils of Mis Jean Bright gave a demonstration of Ballet, Tap, Jazz, Ballroom and Baton Twirling. The pupils taking part were from Port Perry, Black- stock, Caesarea, Sunderland and Uxbridge. The stage was nicely decorated for the different scenes. Mr. G. After the very impressive cere- mony, guests gathered in the hos- pital cafeteria for refreshments. Later in the evening, Jeanne's parents entertained forty guests at their home. A delicfous buffet supper was served and Jeanne was the recipient of many lovely gifts. Congratulations go to Miss Jean Bright for a fine evening of enter- tainment. Miss Bright Is a member of The Canadian Twirling Assoc- iation, The Canadian Dance Tea- chers Asociation and The Nat- ional Baton Twirling Association. Jean is also going to take a sum- mer course this year in Ballet, Tap and Jazz. I. The meeting was called to order by the presiding Presid- ent, Mrs. Sam Cawker, and was opened with the Institute Ode and Mary Stewart Collect. The President of the Ajax Br, Mrs. Mackness, in her warm words of welcome, said she hoped every- one would enjoy the day, and find the meeting beneficial. In the President's report, Mrs. Cawker stated she had visited the 12 Branches during the year, and commented on the excellent work being done by the Branches. She reported one Branch was organ- ized during the year, she attended one Anniversary, three Achieve- ment days, and presented one Life Membership. Reports were presented by the Standing Committee Conveners, covering many interesting Mat- toes and Roll Calls. Excellent topics and projects were under- taken during the past year feat- uring Short Courses, Local Lea- ders Training Schools, Homemak- ing Clubs, Fall Fair exhibits, re- tarded children, safety programs, farm forum nights, entertaining residents of Fairview Lodge, and many other activities. Funds were raised to support scholarships, Adelaide Hoodless Home, Mental health, sponsor a child project, Hospitals, Foundation fund, ete. At the conclusion the District Con- veners led a discussion period,-- the findings were brought back to the general Meeting. A prize was presented by Mrs. Armstrong, Provincial Board Member, to the District for having 100% reports turned in by the Branches. Mrs: C.'B. Schneller, departmen- tal representative for senior actiy- ities, told of services available to the women of the community. Tweedsmuir Histories and a dis- play of Badges, ete. were of inter- est for members to see at the noon hour. A delicious dinner was served by the Ajax United Church Wo- men. Mrs. Stanley Jewell, Dis- trict President of Ontarlo North, brought greetings from her Dis- trict, and extended best wishes to Ontario South in all éndevours. The afternoon session opened with Assembly singing, led by Mrs. Devolin of the Ajax Branch. All 12 Branches answered the roll call with "Pennies for IFriend- ship"---the Missionary project of the Women's Institutes." Phe total amount of pennies turned in was $73.02. An "In Memoriam Service" con- ducted by Mrs. II. C. Hutchinson of Ajax Branch, honoured former members who passed away during the year. The- Provincial Board Member, Mrs. Elton Armstrong of Armit- age, brought greetings from the Provincial Board, and from the new Provincial President, Mrs. Leonard Trivers, Thessalon. In her report, Mrs. Armstrong stres- sed supporting = W. I. projects first. We are working for "Home and Country" and we must make W. I. work effective. We cannot give money to every 'appeal' that comes along. She advised support- ing the International Scholarship fund, which helps underprivil- eged countries. Assistance has been given to the Branches in the North West Territories, due to the floods at Hay River and Fort Simpson. Mrs. Armstrong com- mended the two Branches spon- soring children in Hong Kong, and Greece. She also stated pen pals and friendship links are very important. A farm forum night will be held again next February, the topic will be "The Role of Women in the Canadian Economy". The 3rd National Convention will be held in Nova Scotia, June 1964. Each Branch 1s asked to donate one article for the Con- vention, priced at Branch leve), valued from $1.00 to $1.50. Mrs. William Heron, Sec.-Treas. of Ontario South District gave the financial report, also the report of the Ontario County Scholar- ship Committee. Mrs. C. B. Schneller, Home Economist, reported for the Junior 4-H. Homemaking Clubs, and ad- vised there were 185 Club mem- bers in the County, quite an in- crease over last year, 16- Clubs participated in the last unit. New Water Tower Account, By- law #1349, having a balance unspent of $3,818.76. The Clerk was instructed to write to the Ontario Municipal Board and request that the unused balance of $3,818.76 be used for the extension of watermains. 3. Extension of water Maple Street discussed. It was-decided that the Waterworks Department would extend the water- main from Simcoe Street 100 feet for each user who signs a contract for water service. RESOLUTION --- "That where a watermain is to be extended along an existing Street in Port Perry, the Port Perry Waterworks Department will pay the cost to a maximum of 10Q feet per guaranteed water user, subject to the condition that Port Perry Council does not have to open a new road, this not to apply to sub- divisions. All being at the discretion of Council". Carried. 1. Ob. REPORTS of COMMITTEES Councillor John Orde reported that good use could be made of some ben- ches down at the Park. It was decided that Mr. Clair Mec- Nenly might be able to help the Caretaker in making up some benches from the planks from the old water tank. It was also felt that it would be in order to rent a power saw in con- nection with this project. Bruce Beare reported on the road allowance between the properties of the Misses Harris and Irving Boyd. It was felt that if Council decided to sell this road allowance that the road would have to be legally closed and then advertised for sale. Deputy Reeve, R. A. Kenny, report- ed on the village gravel pit, and thought that it should be investigated to sce if it could not be used to ad- vantage, at least as a source of good fill. On Motion Council Adjourned. Safety Poster Competition Successful Project The Safety | sponsor ed by Farm, Home and Highway Poster--Competltion, as the Ontario County Council, was n very "successful project this year. The rural boys and the public Ontario County entered 398 posters in this competition. Most of these posters girls from schools of were excelent, and showed a good deal of thought and painstaking work on the part of the pupil. Miss Lotta Me Neil, Public School Inspector, and Mrs. A. W. St.John, Librarian, Uxbridge, did a splendid job of judging the competition, The teachers are to be congrat- ulated for encouraging the boys Medical Graduate | Donald Peter MeGibbon, son of Mrs. | J. A. McGibbon and the late Judge A. McGibbon, of Lindsay and Oshawa, recently graduated in medicine from the University of Toronto Medical School. ~ He and his wife Dr. Dian Boyd McGibbon, will be interning at Wellesley Hospital, Toronto, starting June 18.
