Slides Of India Shown To UCW Slides taken in the fascinat- ing continent of India by Miss | Doreen Van Camp were shown at the general meeting of Port Perry United Church Women held on the evening of April 14, Doreen is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Stanford VanCamp of Blackstock. She taught school in Brooklin and in August 1962 went to India for a three year term as teacher of English in the Mission School at Indore, There are about seven hun- dred pupils at this school of whom one hundred are in re- sidence. The Summer vacation begins the end of April and school re-opens the middle of June. Doreen is at present holidaying in Hong Kong and Japan, Miss Alice Dodd introduced Mrs. Richard VanCamp, who showed the pictures, and Mrs. Stanford VanCamp gave the commentary. The slides showed different phases in the life of the people. They receive very low wages and it was apparent that many are of the "poorer class. The schools appeared to be large and had spacious surroundings. Mrs. Jos. Saunder, leader of Unit 7, thanked = Mesdames VanCamp for presenting the needs of India in such an in- teresting manner from personal contact. Mrs. Orr Jeffrey conducted the worship service and was as- sisted by Mrs. W. M, Letcher who led in the meditation and prayer. The ladies were reminded to save labels for the golden book of charity and of the tour on May 27th sponsored by Unit 4 to United Church College, Cov- enant House and Berkley Stu- dios, Mrs. Godley read two delight- ful letters from the foster child. Mrs. Saunders read a letter from the Observer acknowledg- ing the current order and re- questing an increase in sub- scriptions for 1966, . Mrs. Robert Walker gave an excellent report on behalf of the manse committee. A regular meeting will be held May 12th to take care of any business. Refreshments served by Unit 8 brought the meeting to a close. <
