County Council Appoints Committees WHITBY -- Ontario County Council ended its first sitting of the new year Thursday having completed a full agenda of de- tailed business. Little of great importange was discussed. Work was mainly confined to the setting up of committees, filling vacancies and electing committee chairman. $268,000 For N World Relief The Anglican Church of Can- ada during 1964 allocated $268,- 000 for the alleviation of dis- tress and hunger throughout the world. The record sum, an in- crease of $70,000 over the pre- vious year, was raised through the Primate's World Relief Fund. About $950,000 has been con=- tributed to the fund since it was, started in 1960 to permit church members to share in global res lief and rehabilitation, A large proportion of the money is dis- tributed through the World Council of Churches, but imme- diate response is also made to direct appeals for aid, usually from disaster areas. Councillor Everett Quantrill Reeve of Whitby Town, was re- elected chairman of the board of management of Fairview Lodge. The Council gave unani- maus support to the election. The committee has a busy year ahead pushing through work on the new home for old folk being built in Beaverton, This home is planned to serve the northern half of the county. To help the committee in its work, county council elected two further councillors, Reeve Russell Francis and Reeve John Dancey, to serve on the board. Councillor George Brooks, De puty Reeve Whitby Town Coun- cil, was re-elected chairman of the property committee. Here again, as it was pointed out in council, much detail work start- ed during 1964 has yet to be completed. Councillor John G. Hall, De- puty Reevé-of-Ajax;-wes-eleeted- chairman of the Assessment and Taxation Committee. Councillor Harvey Westcott, Deputy Reeve Township of Thorah, was elec ted chairman of the finance committee. - Reeve Neil A. Smith, of the. Township of East Whitby, was elected to head the Roads and Bridges Committee, John Thomas E. K. George Indian Evangelists At Baptist Church Evangelists John Thomas and E. K. George of Kerala State, South India, will bs. featured. speakers at the Port Perry Baptist Church this week-end. The special "Emphasis on India" meetings will begin this Satur- day night at 7.00 p.m., and con- tinue through to: the Sunday. Service at 7.00 pm. As well there will be a discussion on some of the problems facing. that dense- ly populated country; the strength of Nationalism, com- munism, the war on poverty, and the place of Christian missions today. There will be opportun- ity to submit questions to these men,.and to meet them during a time of light refreshment. The Rev. John Thomas is in Canada to study for his Mas- ter's degree in Theology at Cen- tral Baptist Seminary, Toronto. He has been an instructor at the Bethel Bible Institute, Kerala, for over seven years, and has extended a dynamic evangelistic ministry among India's youth. Mr. E. K. George has been with the Christian publication, "Viswadeepam" and has been used extensively. as an inter- preter for North American evangelists who have addressed the National Christians. Both men recently attended the large "Urbana Conference" on world missions, where over 7,000 evangelical college and university students gathered to hear prominent Christian lead- ers speak, including Dr, Billy Graham. We welcome Mr. Thomas and Mr. George to Port Perry, and look to the Lord for a time of increased vision, challenge, and blessing. Details of these plans will be published in next week's paper, Mr. Beare tells the Star that March of Dimes goal for 1966 is $780,000.00 and in Port Perry we hope to raise $425.00. Funds are very badly needed to carry on the vital work of rehabilita- ting the adult disabled of this district and Port Perry is part of the Central Ontario Branch and there are 1091 disabled per- Lions Club Sponsors March Of Dimes Drive sons already known to the Ontario March of Dimes in this Branch area. No doubt there are many more who have not yet come for help, not realiz- ing that something might still be done for them in spite of long-standing disability. If any readers know of such persons, please suggest to them that they write to the District March of Dimes office at 253 Spadina Rd., Toronto, and the caseworker will call on them.
