UXBRIDGE 852-3821 MAINTENANCE FERTILIZER PROGRAM FOR FORAGES Forage crops remove large amounts of nutrients. Four tons of alfalfa will contain around 40 pounds of phosphate and 180 pounds, or more, of potash in addition to the nitro- gen which the legume will obtain from the atmosphere. In order to maintain high yields of forages adequate phosphate and potash must be applied annually. should be applied in late August or early September. In order to maintain the vigor of a legume stand over the means that maintenance applications must be made now! The amount of fertilizer to apply should be obtained from a soil test recommendation, but if one is not available then a field consisting of 40%, or more, alfalfa should re- ceive from 30 to 60 pounds of phosphate and 120 - 180 This level can be met by applying 500 pounds per acre of CO-OP 0-12-24 or 0-12-36. The former fertilizer designed for use on clay or clay-loam soils while CO-OP 0-12-36 is for use on sandy soils.
