He was the una- nimous choice of the New De- mocratic Party at a nominat- ing convention on September 28th in Oshawa. Mr. Hodges' family has operated a fruit farm since 1950 in Winona near Hamilton, This summer he took over the operation of the farm where he has lived for 15 years. Until this time, Mr. Hodges was Canadian Director of an intermational union . He tra- velled extensively in Canada spnding much time in Saskat- chewan,- Alberta, ntario and Quebec. He has worked on as- signments in Geneva, Switzer- land, and in Mexico City. Mr. Hodges' views as a farm- er will interest many of our readers. Here, "in print, is what he has to say about the farmers' fight for a decent liv- ing. lems. But every farmer has the | common problem of marketing Ins produce whether his crop be fruit, grain, cattle, milk or market garden truck. The really important problem is to get a fair price for the crop. 'Fair prices' to me mean that the farmer will be able to | pay for is mortgage at a decent rate and to pay taxes without delay;. that enough fertilizer is applied; that all the necessary sprays are used; taht labour for picking, pruning and trim- ming are paid nough, and that machinery is kept in good re- pair and replaced before it breaks hown all together. O niop ofthis he needs a re- serve for replanting and for re- placing trees and vines injured | by disease or severe weather. "Fruit farming, and general have special production prob- | There may be new varieties farming or dairy farming each that must be planted so that he can meet competition in the market place. So a reserve of cash must be available -- and this depends on how much he can get for his crop, " He also wants to draw an in- come that will let him live in a well furnished home because he wants his family to enjoy some of the good things that his fellow Canadians in the fac- tories make so well. 'Fair prices' or 'parity prices' are so important that help from the Government is essen tial. How much help and in what way it will be provided is the thing farmers must be thinking about when they cone sider each party and each can- didate they will support on November 8th". : { | i A < > ie Pe = TT ON DISPLAY IN OUR SHOWROOM THURSDAY, OCTOBER 7 The Exciting, Economical, Dependable Phone 985-2592 1966 RAMBLER Test Drive Them At Your Local Rambler Dealer Today !
