On arrival, the teachers ob- served the large display of books and equipment from Jack Hoods, Stratford. The President, Mr. Stuart Lane opened the meeting at 9.30 with the Queen after which Rev. Buntgifi led in prayer. In the absence of the reeve, Mr. Irving Boyd, the deputy-reeve extended greetings from the town follow- ed by a hearty welcome by Mr. Roy Cornish, principal of Port Perry School. The Motto for the day was "The Future Belongs to the Fit" and the Inspector Mrs. L. Fretz was able to secure Miss Chat- win and Mr. Devenney, Inspect- ors of Physical Education from the Department of Education, who gave very interesting and helpful demonstrations on Jr. and Sr. Physical Education. This was followed by a coffee break at 10.30 after which ques- tions and discussions followed. An interesting film on Physical Education was then presented. A short business period was conducted and Mrs, I. Starr, chairman of the nominating committee gave the following slate of officers for the com- ing year: Hon. Presidents--Mrs. L. Fretz Mr. Wiseman Past Pres.--Mr. Stuart Lane Pres.--Mrs. Olive McDonald 1st Vice--Mr. John Little 2nd Vice--Miss June Haynes Sec.Treas.--Mr. R. Rutledge All then journeyed to the Ma- sonic Hall where a delicious din- ner was enjoyed. Miss Lynn Mills of Stouffville led in a jolly sing song, after which the In- spector Mrs. L. Fretz welcomed' all the new teachérs and ex- Hilltop Herald The 1965 Annual Fall Com- mencements are now history. A pleasant junior commencement was held last Thursday, and followed by an enlightening senior commencement on Friday evening. Miss Linda Stone's Valedictory address was excel- lent. Reverend Douglas Pil- key's address touched on some timely topies. We lost--Despite the valiant efforts to the contrary, our senior football team was over- come, 8-1, by Pickering College. Handing in excellent perform- ances were Grant Slute, Bill Wozney, and Graham Powell. The whole team went all out. On Wednesday, November 10th Stayner High School's juniors play the Port Perry junior foot- ballers in Port Perry. Students are urged to display their school spirit, and be on hand to cheer. This game is the Georgian Bay final, A trip to the Royal Winter Fair is planned for all Grade 10 students on Friday the 12th. Christmas Examinations will commence November 19th. The ice cream party (for de- serving rooms) will be held November 18k. : The junior girls' volleyball team was edged out of the Georgian Bay championship Playing att Stayner, the girls had a perfect morning, but lost out to Woodbridge in the de- ciding game, --Dave Read pressed deepest regret that the teachers of Reach, Scugog and Port Perry would no longer be with us. She then very graci- ously introduced the Guest Speaker Mr. D. Clee, formerly of the Toronto Teachers' Col- lege, mow Assistant Superin- tendent of Curriculum & Text- books for Dept. of Education and in charge of Television Programs for school. Mr. Clee in his pleasing jo- vial manner gave a very in- spiring address on "The Chang- ing Curriculum" stressing the great need of education today. "The teacher", he said, "is like a candle, who luminates the darkness of youth". We must learn to live and accept change. There is much good in the old methods, but sometimes the old is not good enough. Children must be taught to develop a good background of knowledge, to form good habits of thinking and solving, to do more research to achieve as far as possible and to be encouraged ,to reach ex- cellence. "The teaching we do is not ours to practice as we please but we have to account for it, to those who come after". Mr. J. Little in a few well chosen words expressed the gra- titnade of the teachers to Mr. D. Clee for his inspiring mess- age after which Mrs. McDonald moved a hearty vote of appre- ciation to our President, Mr. Stuart Lane and the Committee for their splendid work in plan- ning a very successful conven tion. Jim Woodward, Zone Commander of Zone F1 from Bowmanville. Mr. Cleator was the guest speaker for the occasion. Raglan S.0.S. Many colourful Hallowe'en decorations were on display in the senior classroom and a cheery Jack O'Lantern with the letters S.0.S. carved out to form a face, was a welcome sight and lent atmosphere to the October meeting. The president Mary June Smith opened the meeting and welcomed the new members. Total number of members pre- sent was 32, A letter was received from the school board giving their approval to our request for a Hold Meeting refrigerated unit to dispense white milk and orange juice to the students. John McLaughlin's name has been inscribed on the crest of the school plaque and John re- ceived his figurine at the recent Port Perry High School com- mencement. John obtained the highest standing on his entrance examinations from Raglan pub- lic school. Grades b, 6, 7 and 8 collected for UNICEF and a total of $39.81 was received. Mr. McNair, the Guidance Instructor from Port Perry High School, is to address the next meeting, Nov. 17. This meeting will be of interest to the fathers and would hope as many as possible will attend. Mary June Smith introduced Mrs. H. Martyn of Port Perry, who showed many interesting & informative slides of the Grand Canyon.
