12. - PORT PERRY ¢ STAR, Thursday, Dec. 9th, 1965 HILLTOP The past few weeks here at Port Perry High have been quite eventful. I shall attempt to relate some highlights. The Georgian Bay Secondary School Association Boys' Volley- ball tournament was held here Saturday, November 27th, with several surrounding schools be- ing represented. Some of the schools are Penetang District High School, St. John's Train- ing School, Uxbridge, Stouff- ville High School, Woodbridge High School and Stayner High School. Our boys, coached by Mr. Dekker, played well but did not reach the finals. To Stouff- ville, the champions ,go our con- gratulations. The annual Sadie Hawkins dance, sponsored by the Liter- ary Society, was held Friday, November 29. Disc Jockeys Bill Holtby and Bill Wozney were commended on their choice of records. Many new records were played. The Basketball season has ar- rived, with tryouts being held for both girls' and boys' teams. xX HERALD The Junior boys played an ex- hibition" game with our Inter- mediates last Friday afternoon, with the latter winning (46-9). Other exhibition games: Our Intermediate team will play Uxbridge's Int. here on Dec. 10, and the Juniors are travelling to Anderson St. High School, Whitby, for a game with An- derson High's Juniors on Dec. 7. The Juniors are coached by Mr. Neigh and the Intermediates by Mr. Firth. Around the school: Mr. Pash- ler's drama club is busily read- ing and discussing plays. The Rifle team, coached by Mr. Litt, recently entered a High School competition, (Port Perry High is but one of many who enter these contests). Mr. Law's History Club has shown some excellent films over the past weeks; included was the history making Ranger VII moon-shot, rented from the Royal Astro- nomical Society of Canada. Sun- day School will be withdrawn and the scholars will take part in the combined service. In the evening at 7.30 o'clock the C.G.L.T. and Explorer girls will conduct a Vesper service to which all are cordially invited Mr. and Mrs. Danny Reesor and Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Dobson were Saturday dinner guests with Mr. and Mrs. Art Couves. Brian Lee is back in school again after spending a few days in hospital following minor sur- gery. Mr. and Mrs. Diceman and family also Mr. Diceman's mo- ther attended church service on Sunday morning. A sincere welcome is extended to these newcomers. Rev. and Mrs. Cooper of Ux- bridge were Saturday visitors at the home of Mr. and Mrs. H. McMillan. Mrs. Harold Craig of Toronto has been spending a few days with her mother and sister. Master Terry Brown of Scu- gog spent the week-end with his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. H. Phoenix. Mr. and Mrs. H. Phoenix at- tended the christening service in Wesley United Church, Tor- onto, of Lisa Christine Rae and were later entertained at a fa- mily party at the home of the baby's parents, Mr and Mus. Ted Rae. Another euchre party was held in the Hall last Friday evening with eleven tables play- ing. High and low score ladies were Mrs. H. Clarke and Mrs. Harry Hill; high and low gents, Wm, Bacon and Ross Cookman, lucky draw winner, Mrs. H. Mec- Millan. As the Sunday School Christmas tree concert is slated for Dec. 17 the next euchre party will be held on the previ- ous Tuesday evening, On Wednesday evening of next week the regular meeting of the W. I. will be held in the Community Hall at 8.30. This will be the Christmas meeting and all' ladies are invited to | Mrs. Doyle. attend. Don Spence is still confined to hospital where he is taking therapy treatments. Hope he continues to improve and will soon be able to return home. Mr. and Mrs, Don Fergusson and family spent Sunday at Schomberg with Mrs. Fergus- son's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lipsett. Mr. Fergusson is driving the school bus formerly driven by Greenbank U.C.W. The regular meeting of the afternoon group of the Green- bank U.C.W. was held Wed, Dec. 1 in the S. S. rooms which were tastefully decorated in keeping with the Christmas Season. Mrs. Phair played Christmas music while the ladies assemb- led. Mrs. Harris gave the call to worship. Hymn 57 was sung. Mrs. Diamond read the Serip- ture, Matt. 2, Verses 1-12. Mrs. Phoenix led in prayer. Mrs. Robt. Leask and Mrs. Phair favored with a duet "Out of the ivory palaces". Mrs. Beare gave a reading "Is the Yule Season a burden or a bless- ing? Mrs. Phair played a piano solo of Christmas Carols. Mrs. Diamond gave a reading "If he had not come". The offering was received and dedicated, and Hymn 54 was sung. Mrs. Harris showed a film strip "The Child of Bethlehem, accompanied by story and song. Mrs. Phoenix presided for the business portion of the meeting first extending a welcome to guests and members, thanks to the group in charge for their fine devotional. A poem was read "What Christmas means". The minutes were read and ad- opted. Twenty-four answered the roll call with a Christmas verse. There were 5 visitors. There were thank you notes for cards and visits. Several items of business were cared for. Hymn 60 was sung. ROVER CREW The weekly meeting of the Port Perry Rover Scouts of Dec. 2 began at 9.00 p.m. with all members present. The skip- per, Wes Lane. extended greet- ings to two members of 7th Oshawa ( P. M. Rose) Rover Crew. Murry Spears and Mike McCaig were visiting the regu- lar meeting. The Oshawa Crew extended an invitation to visit their cabin at Camp Samac at North Oshawa. All agreed that a date be set for January, the time, to be arranged by the leaders. Treasurer's report showed a bank balance of $40.60. Ron Taylor and Dave Murray volunteered to insulate the cabin and when completed the crew will spend a week-end there in December. Ron Taylor was appointed to check frequently about repairs to the bell tent which the Rov- ers have acquired. At the ad- journment of the meeting all enjoyed a period of games.
