The first and sec- ond Guide Companies were in charge of the evening arrange- ments under the capable super- vision of Lieutenant Jayne Car- negie and Cadet Guide Dianne Hall, 'sister of the Gpld Cord Winner. R The presentation of Colours, The Flag of Canada and the Company Colours were in charge of Guides Beverley Car- 300 Chickens Perish In Fire The Port Perry Fire Depart- ment about midnight on Thurs- day, Feb. 28th, was called to a fire on a farm about one mile west of town on Highway 7A. When the firemen atrived a chicken house on the farm of Mr. Hugh Strong was burning fier- ecly inside, and the 300 five weeks old chickens were lost in the flames. The one storey building about 10' x 20' was standing but was completely gutted inside, rr x # The fire Department also made a call to the farm home of Tom Dart on the 9th con- cession of Reach on Tuesday about 65.80 p.m, A chimney fire was extinguished, and no dam- age was done to the property. The main highlight of the | evening was the unique and | informative "My Candle Is Lit" | ceremony. Coun- cils and member of the two School Boards of the Township of Scugog and the Village of Port Perry were in full attend- ance. Chairman for the even- ing was Mr, Peter Wiseman, In- spector for the Department of Education for this area, The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the recent de- cision of the Scugog Township School Board to join with Port Perry School Board, and the various problems arising there- from. Mr. Wiseman reminded the meeting of the decision made by the Scugog Board at the Ontario County Consultative Committee meeting held .on February 2nd, and recited the portion of the Public Schools Act which governed such amal- gamation. The Act reads: Sec. 40 (5) "Where the average daily attendance of pupils of the public schools under the juris- diction of a Board is less than 100 in any year, the Inspector Presents Gold Cord ser vax Rate > Daughter Is Proud Recipient At 21 Mills The Central Ontario County | District High School Board at the last regular meeting set the | tax rate for 1966 at 21 mills. This is the same rate as last year, but necssitated some very close budgeting to hold this rate. The increase in Provincial Grants & Assessment has made it possible for the Board to meet the increased cost of Education without raising the mill rate. As nearly all Grants are paid on daily attendance it is very im- portant that students attend re- gularly. The method of coring is in 3 parts -- with a breakdown of each part divided between De- livery, Material and Language and Literary Form.
