CLES tl Dad i 10 - PORT PERRY STAR THURSDAY, DEC. 8, 1966 BROOKLIN NEWS Be sure to lock your doors & windows when you go out these days. There are a group of thieves "shopping for their Christmas money early this year. We've heard of several robberies around Brooklin in the past few weeks, the last one was Short's Drug Store. It's too bad there is always a small minority of people that feel they're intelligent because they can sneak things from honest people. They are really proving, that they're too darn lazy to get off their posteriors and work for a living. There has been a lot of con- troversy ' over Super Markets and grocery stores lately. Per- haps we are kicking at the wrong door. As a rule the mar- __gin of profit on produce is nar-| row 'and there is always a cer- tain amount of spoilage that eats into the income. If we weigh the hours. .of time and effort saved by the housewife, by using frozen or canned goods, it might surprise us to find- out we are money in poc- 'ket. Personally, I'm a pretty good -cook when I use prepared ingredients but my do it your- self efforts leave a little to be desired. "it, we're While we're on the subject of getting proper value for your money, taxes are another topic that is given a lot of abuse. When you come right down to pretty lucky to be able. to live in a country with roads and schools and conveni- ences like ours. Sometimes we holler so loud for what we want, that we forget what we already have. If people had to pay out of their pocket for all the things we take for granted, our land tax and income couldn't come close to the total. It's another wonderful thing that we can have all the best ser- vices and still have the free- dom to complain if we don't like the set-up, which means, I can preach all I want about the ood things we get from the Sor grnme and still be one our year. Sanies go up again next If Johnny says 'Thank you' without being prompted, and Janie grabs the dish towel without any argument, and Jimmie picks all his "toys up without being - asked. They're not sick, mother, they've just found out it's only three weeks till Christmas. a] Interesting Accounts From Scugog, 80 Years Ago Below are two interesting ac- counts of Scugog Township history, supplied by Mrs. S. In 1860 it was swoved to the present school site and in 1865 was burned. School was held in a log house until another school was built. This school was of wooden construction and re- mained until 1928 when it was torn down and replaced by a modern brick building. Miss Reta Quantz of Barrie.was the first teacher to teach in the new school. She is now (1938) Mrs. Earle Reader and is liv- ing in this community. The three Trustees in office at the time of the building of the new school were: Messrs. Thos. Redman, O. Reader and A. Martyn. Miss Winnifred Neddery be- came the regular teacher in 1930. In 1944 she became ill and later resigned. Mrs, Earle Reader supplied for four months until the end of the term, when Miss Wright was hired. The trustees at this time were Louis Pearce, John Reader and Chas. Reader. In 1936 Mr. R. A. Hutchison, Inspector. In 1944 Mr, A. Ar- chibald Inspector.
