"Among one of 'When asking Mr. Henning- sen how he come to meet his bride while living that far wapart, and long before to- day's fast communication systems, he said he met a brother of Mrs. Henningsen in New York, and was invit- ed to visit him on the family farm. » "The .day I arrived, my "friend and I were walking around looking at the farm", Mr. Henningsen said, "Then I saw this lovely girl walking across the field carrying a pail." *"I asked my friend, who the girl was, and he replied, "It's my sister." "We walked over to her, and I offered to carry her pail, and that was --the "beginning "of a very happy life for me", Mr. Hen- ifingsen said with a youthful gleam in his eyes. - "You are talking too much, Tom," Mrs. Henningsen said modestly, but appreciatively. After the wedding, couple returned to New York where they resided until 1916. 'Then came the assignment which was to be the best 7 years in their married life. They were to work among the natives near a town call- ef Sagada, on the Philippine Islands. One remarkable accomp- lishment during those years was the construction of a building to serve as school agsewell as church. ' Mr. Henningsen talked the head man of the village into supplying him with 10 men to help construct the build: ing, and he in turn promised that they would have a school. Only primitive tools were available, but the natives un: der the supervision of Mr, Henningsen .cut the trees, the building. "Do you know", Mr. Hen. ningsen said, "there wasn't a single nail in that building. We made wooden pegs, ham- mered them into holes drill- ed into the planks to hold walls and roof together." "I know it's hard to believe, but the building, when it was completed cost only $10.00, and that money was to pro- vide enough rice to feed the native workers." Here Mr. Henningsen with the assistance of a native, taught the children to read and write, during the day, and held services during the evenings. Mrs. Henningsen, on the same time acted as she calls it as a "housemother" in Beso, a village about 10 miles away. She was also in charge of a school, which was oper- ated on an annual, allowance of $600 including feeding the children. Mr. and Mrs. Henuingien agree that the Seven years be they spent on the Philippine Islands were the most re- warding and interesting of their 62 years of married life.
