10 - PORT PERRY STAR -- Thursday, July 27th, 1967 Minor Softball News By Vin Walker Tripp's Const. Juniors de- feated Oshawa Georgian Mo- tel 8-5 last Monday as Steve Foster came through with a good pitching display. On Tues. at the local Park Oshawa People's Clothing de- " feated Tripp's 5-3 in a well played game which featured fine defensive play by short- stop Russ Stephens and Paul Hughes at second base. John Popowich pitched another good game and hit a home run, Tripp's will meet the win- ner of Madoc or Verona in the OASA Playoff. Lions Club Bantams were in Belleville on Sat. and en- joyed a great day. In the 1st game Lions defeated Hastings 8-0 as Ken Irvine pitched a steady game. In the second game Lions were defeated by St. Cathar- ines 8-3. The local boys got off to a bad start in this game and just could not rally enough to win. Coach Al Wackett will now await O0.A.S.A. Playoffs with Cobourg which will start about Aug. 12th. I.G.A. Pee Wee's will meet Zion in the first round with ~the winner having a bye into the Zone Final. Legion Squirts will meet Oshawa in the first round 0.A.S. on about Aug. 10th in Oshawa. All House League teams are reminded that team re- cords of won and lost must be turned in or a team stand- ing will not be made up' for playoff draw. The past week-end the 0.A.S.A. executive met in Hamilton to draw up playoff draws. Approximately 350 teams are ready to start playoffs and 374 umpires are regist- ered including ten from Port Perry. It would appear that at the 1968 convention at St. Catharines the members will have an opportunity to study and vote on a new light- weight ball which will stand- up under heavy use. This will be a 12" model only. While patrolling 13,800 miles, . 178 vehicles were checked with 106 drivers be- ing charged and 60 warned. cliffe was accompanied by her two daughters Misses Alyve and Uneeta Bryant. On Saturday Miss Olyve Bry- ant took the Bryant bus with Mr and Mrs. Earl Bry- ant of Port Perry to spend a few days near Haliburton. On Sunday Mr, and Mrs. B. Wanamaker started on schedule for a week's holi- day in U.S. They plan spend- ing a day with their aunt Mrs. Rattenburg in Chicago. Store keepers this week are Neil, Donna and Bill, so look for bargains. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Nobbs entertained their cousins Mr. and Mrs. Carl Bishop of Hamilton last week. At home for the week-end from Toronto were Mr. and Mrs. J. Groves and daughter with the Garfield Stones and Mr. and Mrs. Harold Moon with the Aubrey Moons. Mr. and Mrs. Belair spent Sunday evening at the Robt. (Brinkman home in Port Perry. > The S.S. picnic 'at Geneva Park on Sat. was only a par- tial success. Those who at- tended.reported a good time, but the crowd was much smaller than usual, due in part at least to delayed hay- ing operations. Another rea- son may have been that near- ly all our teen-agers have summer jobs this year. A change of day for the picnic may be indicated. Mr. Harris led us astray by suggesting that Mr. Ed. McCaig would be speaking on Sunday morning. It was Mr. McNeil. Services will be as usual next week but we won't even hazard a guess as to who will be in the pulpit. Attendance at both ser- vices was below average. At S.S. Misses Diane Barr and Bonnie Short sang 'All things bright and beautiful' as the contribution of the "In-be- tween" class. maker and Mrs. M. It's 4.30, Friday afternoon and you race for your car in the parking lot. It's been a scorcher of a week and you can't wait to get to the lake. You arrive home in good time only to find that your wife and family aren't quite packed yet. You gulp a sandwich, help with the pack- ing, load the car and you're off. You've been hoping to 'beat the main rush of week- end traffic but you're a little too late and the highway's already crowded. You begin to pass a little more than usual but that's O.K., you know the road and you're a| good driver. If only you can pass enough cars maybe you'll be in the clear and with a little more speed you'll be in the lake swim- | ming before sunset. You pull out 'to pass 3 cars in a row but you misjudge the speed |- of an approaching vehicle. It's 4.30, Friday afternoon, exactly one year later and it's been a scorcher of a week again, you don't bother to race for home. This time there's no one left to race home to.: se a Statistical Report July 16-22 No. of Motor Vehicle Accidents .................. 34 No. of Persons Injured .... 9 No. of Persons Killed ...... 1 No. of Accident Charges 18] No. of Moving Violations 106 No. of Vehicles Checked 178 No. of Vehicles Wained 60 General Occurrences ........ 93 Thefts ............ bliin 7 Malicious Damage ............ 2 Insecure Premises ............ 1K Auto Theft .................... 118 Disturbances ...................... 8 Liquor Offences ................ 2 Miscellaneous .................... 69 Impaired Drivers ................ 1 Stolen Cars ........................ 2 WEEKEND ESCORTED TOURS TO EXPO "FRIDAY TO SUNDAY J4500 otra INCLUDES : For Further Details Contact . . .
