PORT PERRY STAR -- Thursday, Nov. 23rd, 1967 -- 3 JOSEiH HENRY PEEL The death of Joseph Henry Peel occurred early Friday morning, Nov. 10, in Oshawa General Hospi- "tal. He was in his 95th year. Mr. Peel was born Jan. 11th, 1873 in the vicinity of Victoria Rd., Kirkfield. In early childhood he mov- ed with his parents to Manvers Township where he was raised and educat- ed. Eventually he started farming on his own and on Nov. 16th, 1898 he married Sarah Ann Hunter. In 1908 they with their fam- ily moved to Port Perry on the Manchester Road where Mr. Peel continued farming on a more exten- sive and successful man- ner up to the day of his retirement in Nov. 1951. He then purchased a mo- dern home in Port Perry, 88 John St. Mr. and Mrs. Peel were blessed with two sons, Ronald who was founder of the present Internation- al Peel Poultry Farm Ltd., and Harry a prominent & highly respected business man in Port Perry. Ron- ald died very suddenly April Tth, 1965 and his mother Mrs. Joseph Peel passed away Feb. 10, 1966. Surviving Mr. Peel are his son Harry, also four grandchildren (Helen) wife of Dr. A. C. Bathie, (Miriam) wife of Dr. D. J. Price, William and Paul, sons of Harry and Ronald respectively. There are also twelve great grand- children. -OBITUARIES- Joseph Peel was a man of outstanding character and principle. A sincere church: man all his life, leading to his appointment as an Elder, which he served faithfully for many years. He retired in March 1964 to continue as an honourary member for the remainder of his life. On that occasion he was pre. sented with a suitable book of appreciation from the congregation. Mr. Peel was always the good neighbour both as a farmer and a retired man. He loved his garden and from it several of his neigh- bours were generously re- membered each year. Dur: ing the summer of 1967 he planted the whole 4 acre with his own hands, with the remark "I shall give most of it to others as I shall never again need it". He knew that the evening of his long life was lengthening into shadows as his sun was set- ting. ' In the intimacy of friend- ship Mr. Peel revealed a quiet confidence, and to the last hours his intellect and clarity of mind never dimin- ished. At 95 it was simply amazing and \ eloquently in- dicates the life\he lived. The funergl-'service was conducted by the Rev. Alec Rice, at the Chapel of Mec- Dermott - Panabaker, Port Perry. The Pallbearers were United Church Elders, Gord- on Reesor, Wentworth Wat- son, Geo. Samells, P. M. Willes, Freeman McCullough and Lloyd Myers. Interment Pine Cemetery.
