Sponsored by the Hi-C group, Mr. Arbuckle talked about and showed slides from his experiences as a member of the Ontario crew who took part in the Centennial Voya- geur Canoe Pageant. The normal rate of padd- ling was 65 per minute, dur ing the 1% to mile sprint races which featured their visits to many centres, was increased to 92. Daily time during the 104 days on the water were accumulated plus sprint times to determine the final team standings. Across Lake Superior from Fort William to Red Rock was de- scribed by Derek to show the competitive spirit and the hard work involved. This 99 mile stretch took 21 hours of steady paddling and at the end only 13 seconds separ: ated the first four canoes. On signal the paddlers changed sides without miss: ing a stroke in order to use the muscles of both arms as well as a form of rest, Derek explained. He estimated that in the journey his "sideways travel' had been 33 miles, re- sulting in many blisters and worn jeans. SELL: RENT + SWAP + HIRE * BUY + SELL RENT OMSIP Makes Group Insurance Possible As of January 1st, 1968, OMSIP will offer a group medical insurance, Ontario Health Minister Matthew B, Dymond announced recently, Many groups now too small to qualify for coverage by private companies will be eligible under this new pro- vision. The minimum size of groups will be six persons, much smaller than usually required for group coverage by private companies, and there will be provision for "collector groups," an inno vation for medical insurance in this province. At present, OMSIP (Ont ario Medical Services Insur- ance Plan) provides coverage only for individuals their families. "The purpose of this ex- tension are to meet special needs that have become ap- parent, and to serve better Named Director Adult Education Mr. M. M. Boyd, BA, M.A, and B. Paed., has been named Director of Adult Education for the city of Ottawa. Mr. Boyd, who was born and educated in Toronto, re. ceived his B.A. at 'U. of T., has been a High School teach- er for many years. Just pre- vious to entering the adult Education field he was Vice Principal of the new Lauren: tian High School in Ottawa, and. at the time of this ap- pointment he was acting director 'of the Adult Edu cation office. Mr. Boyd, who is a brother of Irving A. Boyd, Port Perry, married the former Ann Farmer in 1934, daughter of the late S. Farmer. County Establish Dental Program A dental health program has been established by the Ontario County Health Unit. This has recently been ex- panded .to provide free pre- ventive services for pre- school children 20 months and over who may have a dental examination at the Child Health Clinic in your area. This is carried out by a qualified dental hygienist.- Although no treatment is involved at this clinic tests may be done to determine the speed. at which dental decay can develop. Parents will be advised to take their children to the family den: tist for early treatment where this is indicated.. A topical flouride clinic will be opened in Décember at the branch office in Ux- bridge. Parents who wish their pre-school children (3 to b years of age) to receive topical applications of flour- ide may either phone the Ux- bridge office (852-6091) or arrange an appointment with the dental hygienist attend: ing the Child Health Clinics at Claremont, Port Perry or Zephyr. and the well-being and conveni- ence of the people of Ont- ario," Dr. Dymond said. Benefits and rates will be the same in a group as they are now for an individual. It is expected that among the groups will be many who have not found group cover- age practical in the past. Private plans in many cases require a minimum of at least 20 for group coverage. The collector groups that can qualify for OMSIP cover- age are groups with some common bond other than em- ployment. For example, merchants or members of an association might form them- selves into a group in order to make their OMSIP cover- age more convenient. Persons eligible for premi- um assistance who have ap- plied for OMSIP benefits will continue to be covered on an individual basis. Dr. Dymond pointed out that OMSIP makes medical insurance available to all, re- gardless of age, state of health or financial circum- stances.
