School Commencement {Continued VALEDICTORY ADDRESS Tonight, we the graduating class of 1967, take part in these our final commence- ment exercises. It is a strange feeling, sitting in the audience, watching as an on- looker, instead of being an active participant. Each of us recalls past commence- ments when we sang angeli- cally for Mr. Ashton, not showing all the stress we caused him. Some of us ex- perienced the anguish of practising for plays but also the thrill of success. We too felt the bruises from tumb- ling and the tensions and worries that something would go wrong, but usually every- thing came off well. We stand now as on a threshold, looking back with sad nostalgia, knowing our High School days are really over; we look ahead with fearful anticipation -- eager to be out on our own, but sometimes the road of life upon which we are embark- ing seems a little too fright: ening. We leave behind all the fa- miliar faces and places, the secure world of our home and community and go to a new and challenging one. But we take with us so much more. Our makeup is the re- sult of many factors which have acted upon us through- out our high school years. The friendships we have formed have given us the ability to get along with others as well as to appre- ciate what this kind of as- sociation means. Our teach- ers - and we have been lucky to have such great ones - have spent many long hours of hard work in preparation and teaching, in marking and correcting, together with ex- tra hours for counselling. We hope that all your hard work will not be in vain and that we will make you proud of us. We are grateful to our parents, for all their guidance and interest and the sets of values that they have taught us; we hope we will not fail you! ; The High School years can be said to be like a founda- tion -- the groundwork on which to build all the acquir- ed learning and guidance we take with us as sign posts for our future life. For now, being on our own can prove to be a very shattering and searching experience. We leave the secure and comfort- able position of high school where we were sheltered. Our lives were closely knit and revolved around our group. We were afraid to be different or apart, or to in- volve ourselves in situations that would call for independ- ent thinking or action. Now we are on our own and our secure little world has been shattered. There is no long- er anyone telling us what to do; the decisions we make have to be our own. But perhaps we have not been Your Christmas Party. But each time we get up and go on and we are all the stronger. Although we may be depressed or mo- mentarily miserable, we can console ourselves in that we are developing into mature, responsible adults, as edch new experience tests us. In- deed we are tested over and over again as we are influ- enced by so many new ideas, opinions and ways of life around . us. Then we can lean on our foundations and find strength in our ideals. Therefore, it is necessary that you, as present students of Cartwright High School, not only enjoy your high school life but also set your sights in order to be able to decide what your real values are. You should learn to think for yourselves -- not just to cram or memorize-- about the world around you and what you want from it. Don't limit yourselves to a few isolated experiences for there is so much in this world to see and do. Prac- tice making your own deci- sions after careful reflection. "Cultivate your own gardens" and then when you do get out on your own all your pointers will be set in the right direction and you will be more than halfway home. The High School years are very exciting as well as be- ing formulating. It is here that the greater advantages of a small high school can clearly be felt. Here every- one is involved--in the Glee Club, sports and dramatics; there is a greater opportunity to work as a lab assistant, as a librarian, to be a cheer- leader or to be on an athletic team. Here each student is an individual and not a part of the masses. Each one feels a personal identification and association with his school; this accounts for the tremendous school spirit found at C. H. S. This graduation class has been proud of this, our school. We have met the challenge not only in com- pleting Grade 13 but also our class has made 'a signifi- cant contribution to C.H.S. We have been Students' Council members; we have willingly taken our part in sports and every school acti- vity. We have met the chal- lenge and now we challenge LAST WEEK ARE | Gordon Cleaners SPECIAL OF THE WEEK SUITS (Ladies or Gents) 99c¢ THE $1.09 SPECIALS AS ADVERTISED Gordon Cleaners Port Perry (Corner Queen and Perry Sts.) Therefore you are respon: sible to your school; it is your duty to leave a good re- cord and so add to our school's prestige. You are responsible to your parents and to your teachers in ful- filling their expectations. « And you are responsible to yourselves to meet new ex- periences and get the most out of them. So, I say farewell to my fellow classmates. I wish you good luck in all you do. We will think often about our High School days, ever remembering the gold and the blue! Judy Cochrane.
