April 12 TRAILERS 985-2528 Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Pren-| - LETTER TO EDITOR I too, was thrilled when I read the letter of Barry Prentice some time : ago. Quite often through the years I've been wondering whether Canadians, old and young, really love their Country: This love not in the sense of blind patriotism, but shown in willingness to do something for it without asking something back and showing appreciation and constructive criticism, I am happy to say that I met a few who show this spirit. But we must realise the fact that as Canadians we have different ethnic back- grounds: Loyalist and other Anglo-Saxon, French, and others from all over the world, but mostly from Eur- ope. We, new Canadians, com- ing from Holland, grew up, not under the Union Jack & Red Ensign, but under the Red, White and Blue, along- side a separate banner of Orange. We too had a Royal Family to be proud of, an example to every family. Before we asked for our Canadian citizenship-papers, I felt glad that in the later part of the 17th century, England and Holland were bound together (in vain to struggle against a feeling of lives near Arnhem and. Wal- cheren during the second world war, It was quite something, when about 10 years ago the judge took an Oath of us " to renounce all loyalty and obedience to any other Sovereign", followed by 5 lonely seconds, during which we, according to the: judge were State-less. Then we repeated after .the judge that we "acknowledge and honour Queen Elisabeth as Sovereign". This Oath stands and I think it stands for just about every new Canadian. - And I think we must have an open mind for the ques- tion whether the Union Jack and Red Ensign; the Royal Family & Commonwealth are still the -most' binding sym- bols of patriotism and Cana- dian Unity. This is so-because. of the fact, that during the 20th cenfury Canada wants "to pick 'her own beans" any- way and in view of the dif- ferent backgrounds of the Canadian people. It may be unpopular to ask this ques- tion, but if it really helps Canada I take the risk of being unpopular. I am yours, my Country, John den Boer pride that it was "a daring Dutchman", the Prince of Orange, who led both coun- tries for 13 crucial years in a struggle for freedom). And we think with thank. fulness about the Canadian] young men who lost their HOMES WANTED L REAL STATE LID REALTOR MEMORIAL y PUBLIC MEETING.
