Greater Oshawa {3 with a. population of approximately 100,000 people AN OPEN LETTER TO CANADIAN PARENTS By their nature children are inquisitive, they const- antly ask questions. From the answers they get, from the examples they are shown will grow their attitudes .--- in later life. Actually our education programs are trying to teach our children to respect their neighbours, their friends. We profess that all within our society must be given equal opportunity and we contemplate happily the tolerant and free world we live in. Can we in all good conscience though, draw a geographical line and say to our children - "It's just North American children we are worried about. Let other countries look after their own? It has become acutely Wheamifortdie, 0 live in a comparatively affluent nation, next door to starvation, degradation and want. Therefore, we want to give our children a sense.of commitment of the world. On Hallowe'en night if your son or daughter carry a UNICEF box they will feel part of a society that cannot be ignored. If they understand this as children they reach adulthood, without effort, ready to make the world a better place to live. Is not that a good reason to carry a UNICEF box on Hallowe'en night? A Memorable Evening' 'With A Fine Orchestra For a one time member of the Oshawa Symphony Orchestra, but some 10 years ago, when the group, small in numbers, but all with love and enthusiasm for oo music, it was indeed a delightful experience to the orchestra's concert in the Eastdale Collegiate pin Joh Sunday night. This was the opening concert of the orchestra's 12th season, now larger in numbers, far superior to the orchestra of a decade: ago. . To say the Jeast, we were more than impressed, by the excellent orchestra, still not as large as could be hoped for, all amateurs, but with a sound more like a professional orchestra. Each and every number played demanded much, not only as an orchestral unit, but also by some of the individual musicians in brief, but intricate solo parts. ---- « We are particularly thinking. of Moussorgsky's "A Night on the Ball Mountain," This is indeed a demand- ing composition and we were natur. lly pleased and proud when Len Taylor, well known Tocal. pscian and. principal clarintist of the orchestra along with - a fine young flutist Joan Zacour when the conductor, Jacob Groob motioned them to stand for a special round of applause for their flawless interpretations of their solo parts. : - The string section of the orchestra proved to be extremely - competent. Under the inspiring baton of Mr. Groob, it was a delight to hear the orchestra's delivery of Tchaikowsky's well known Andanta Cantabile. - The principal work on the program Piano Concerto No. 1, Op. 11 by Chopin made a fitting climax to the _ evening's concert. The young Hungarian born soloist, Judith Kenedi, in Canada only two years; no doubt will 'have a great future career. She captivated the audience with her perfect technique and excellent interpretation -of the Chopin Concerto. Miss'Kenedi has performed on 'many previous. occasions, but never before had she . played with an orchestra. Under Mr, G s guidance, the orchestra accompanied the young soloist with con- fidence and added much to the success. The only dismal point of the evening was the fact that could only muster about 600 at this perfectly entertain- re, a forest région & G nd" outdoor recreation fore Why Carry. a UNICEF Box 50 YEARS AGO- Thursday, October 23, 1919 "In High School sports the following championships were won: Boys Sr. - Mansell Jiskeon Boys Jr. - Willie Nesbitt Girls Sr. - Aleta Ferguson Girls Jr. - Velma Neil A carpet ball league has » been formed by members of the Fire Brigade. On the second day of July, I began clean. ing up the basement. And I can prove it. There's, still a sordid little heap of dust, detergent and other basement garbage sitting there, proof positive that I got one corner swept out. It's in a direct line with the washer, so:that you have to walk around it every time. This creates some interesting comments. My major project of the summer was to have been putting a new top on a little hack 'porch, under which we pyt our gan bage cans.
