All children "do not come from families that can afford to leave a lake at our doorstep to travel three hundred miles north in search of clean. water. And how long will those northern lakes remain pure? As lakes and streams close at home become polluted more and more people are going north and taking their filthy habits along with them. Pollution is caused by people. The sooner we put pressure on the authorities to make this destruction of public resources an offense that will be punished, the sooner this theft will be stop- ped. . Meantime, what can we do as individuals? We can start by throwing our own gum wrappers and beer bottles into' the trash cans instead of into the lakes and rivers. We can encourage others to do the same thing. We can support every plan developed by industry or government to clean up this pollution, even if it causes us some personal inconvenience or expense. We have a vast fortune to gain if we win, we have everything to lose if we fail. We had better get started, it is later -- EDITORZ recent visit of The Right Honourable John G. Diefen- baker and Mrs. Diefenbaker to the school. In order to attend Port Perry High School, Mr. Dief- enbaker delayed for a month or more, an address -to over three thousand Manitoba Grade 12 students in Winni- peg, orignally scheduled for Friday, February 27th. On our drive back to Ot- tawa, after we picked up his new car at Beare Motors, Mr. Diefenbaker spoke of the ex- cellent appearance, demean- our and deportment of the students, and. the apparent high level of quality teach- ing maintained by the teach- ing staff. Yesterday morn- ing, in a phone call from Ot- tawa, Mr. Diefenbaker defer- red to a speech he made to students of Purdue Univer- sity in South Bend, Indiana 'on the subject of Canada-U.S. relations, last Thursday. The substance of his remarks were simply that Purdue stu- dents could learn a lot from Port Perry High School stud- ents in the areas of simple courtesy and respect. My wife and Mrs. Valerie Butt of Scugog drove my car to Ottawa so that we would have it available for our stay at their home as well as the Parliament Buildings. . Our sincere thanks to make the Diefenbaker two day visit such a success, and particularly to Mr. Grant MacDonald, Principal and our fine young guides, Jo- anne Jackson & Scott Kenny. Sincerely, .
