Transport Minister Irwin Haskett said that officials in his Department and the tea- chers who have taken the course "agreed for some time that there was a need to up- grade and expand this train. ing program for high school teachers who volunteer for the important responsibilty |: of instructing our young dti- vers on the proper attitudes and skills as motorists." Mr. Haskett said the 1969 Conference of Provincial Ministers responsible for mo- tor vehicle administration ac- cepted the principle of a standardized three - week training program for teach- ers with 50 percent of the time devoted to in-car in- struction. "The Ontario Safety Lea- gue, which has done a tre-|k mendous job: over the years of arranging these courses, felt that it did not have the resources {0 administer an expanded program. The Ont. ario Motor League has kindly agreed to take on this res- ponsibility and offer the pro- gram on a regional basis," The course was initiated by the University of Toronto in 1947. Administrative re- sponsibility in courses was assumed by the Ontario Safe- ty League in 1955; The In- surance Bureau of Canada provides a financial grant to help defray the cost of the courses. In 1960, 36 high schools |i were offering driver - educa- tion for students. Today 475 of Ontario's 555 high schools are enrolled in the program.
