Editor, Port Perry Star, Dear Sir: As a member of the York Pioneer Sciety, I was among those who participated in the Walking Tour of Port Perry 'led by Mr. Napier Simpson on October 19. It was a delight to visit old houses and other landmarks * of the area and to learn a little" of Port Perry's in- teresting history, I particularly enjoyed the visit to the schoolhouse-cum- church museum set up by the Lake Scugog Historical Society. This kind of grass roots effort is essential for ~ the preservation of Ontario's history and the standard set by Port Perry is an enviable - one. - Congratulations to the museum's director and to all - who have lent a hand in what must be a time-consuming Sw me EDITOR but' "fascinating project. Needless to say, its value and importance to the community (and to the province as a whole) will grow steadily with the years, Yours sincerely, Mrs. F. S. Harwood. The new Council willmeet for the first time on January 10, for an inaugural ceremony, and a regular business session, FLEA BAS an, PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesday, Dec. 8,197 = B First snowfall brings heat to Council Chamber | Port Perry's: first major snowfall of the season also. brought some heat in the form of a lively but good- natured discussion at the regular meeting of Council, November 30th. . Councillor Howard Hall asked why the Village Works Department does not start snow removal on the main tersections in the downtown area before snow is removed on the residential streets, It was Councillor Hall's con- tention that the business section should have priority. Deputy Reeve and Works Chairman Phil- Orde coun- tered that the policy is -to remove -downtown snow first. He said that snow piled up after the last snowstorm because machinery was not functioning properly. Councillor Gerald Jack- man suggested that if necessary, the Works Department should start snow premoval early in the morning after a storm, so that routes will be clear by the time normal business haurs start. Councillor Hall . main-' tained that in the past snow removal had not started first on the main street. He asked Council what would happen if he took things to extremes and bull-dozed the snow from the street in. front of ¢his Queen Street business, leaving it piled on the street. Reeve Robert Kenny an- swered that Councillor Hall could go ahead and try this if he wanted, but added that the Village would probably plow the snow back again. The discussion ended with the whine of a snowmobile making it almost impossible for Council members to hear what was being said. In spite of the snowmobile racket, a resolution was passed to instruct the Works Depart- ment to begin snow removal after future storms on streets in the downtown business area.
