bh » than it is Dostoyevski, Shakespeare, or Walt Whitman. ils on RE SRL "BY JOHN B. McCLELLAND (continued) nebulous and abstract, and hing: mostly op the discovery of what is NOT Canadian, 1 _. Canadian is not Billy Graham, or Mom's apple ple. Canadian is not Radio City Music Hall, the Kremlin, Disneyland or Buckingham Palace. It is not Wall 'Street, the Champs Elysees, Sunset Boulevard, or Trafalgar Square. Canadian is not jai alai, surfing or bull fights. It is not flamenco, calypso, or dixie jazz. It. "is not kangaroos, chimpanzees, or saber-tooth tigers. It . is not Rembrandt, Goya or Gainesborough, any more Canadian is not Che Guevara, John Birch Society, or Angela Dayis, One could go on and on about what is not Canadian. The big question of what IS Canadian still remains. Shall we try .to answer it? Firstly, Canadian is a physical mass of land made up -- of lakes and rivers and mountains and prairies, swamps and cities, and glaciers, orchards and pine forests. But these alone do not answer the question what is Canadian? ; Obviously, the people who live and die in the physical Canada must have something to do with what is "Canadian. Canadian is a feeling, an awareness. It's a delicate, complicated, and often profound bond that co-exists - between the minds of the people who live the land, and the: land itself. Canadian then, is not the Toronto Maple Leafs or the "a Montreal Canadians. Rather, it's chasing a puck across a frozen pond on a Saturday morning in January when it's 35 below zero. Bo Canadian isnot a picture post-card of Peggy's Cove. It's standing on the rocks at Peggy's feeling the sea- breeze and the salt spray in your face and hair. i Canadian is not the Canadian Shield. It's hiking over "it, through its silent forests; sloshing through its muskeg and swamp, fighting its mosquitos, paddling "on its lakes, or simply thinking about its ageless, timeless rock. The same can be said about the Rockies, they are not Canadian. What is Canadian is seeing them, ex- 5 periencing them, standing on them, feeling their cq DeAULY, their strength... eosin Canadian is not the Parliament Buildings. It's what has taken place inside that is Canadian-the making of laws, and decisions good and bad, the men and ideas that' have occupied - the --chambers; offices and hallways. : : Canadian is not the Trans-Canada Highway. It's driving it; standing on it, hitch-hiking on it; knowing that is a link, a life-line that stretches the width of the land; bringing all that is the land a little closer. "Canadian is not objects. It's perception of objects. anadian has to come from the mind, the senses. You can't touch it; you have to feel it. And Canadian is one more thing, It's the feeling I get when I think we might lose more than we have lost already. And that is sad. MANCHESTER, ONT.
