However, for- mic acid or formaldehyde, will not prevent spoilage in dirceteut forages, says Carl Moore, Agronomy Division, Kemptville College of Agri- cultural Technology. In one case at the College, 35 to 40 percent spoilage resulted when formic acid was used on forage in a horizontal silo. Formic acid will prevent the breakdown of protein. It can be packed and sealed with plastic, em- ploving practices similar to those to make haylage. The management required is about equal. Farmers who consider using formic acid to prevent breakdown of protein should also be aware of the cost, says Mr. Moore. At $1.75 to £2.00 per gallon, the cost is about $8 to $10 per ton, on a dry malter basis. OPP Reports For the week ending June 4, the Whitby detachment of the OPP reports a total of 21 motor vehicle collisions causing $15,000 damage, and injuring 11 persons. There were no fatalities. To date this year, there have been five persons killed on the roads patrolled by the Whitby OPP. There were four persons killed to the same date last year. Also for the week ending June 4, the OPP reported 104 general occurrences includ- ing 13 liquor offences, 6 thefts, 3 assaults, 2 cases of malicious damage, 1 distur- bance and 1 assault.
