Below is his speech printed as he presented it to the large gathering attending the opening. : Mr. Chairman, Honoured Guests, Ladies and Gentlemen: Tonight your Board of Education has bestowed a unique and great honour upon me by asking me to perform the outstanding duty to Officially Open this beautiful addition to this Public School. I sincerely consider that by asking me to act in this important capacity that really the Powers that be are virtually recognizing the long-term services as rendered by my many many faithful colleagues as teachers and former School Board members from Port Perry. And so, in my humble way, I shall keep this thought uppermost. I just made a reference to the addition to this building as being beautiful. Your Principal very recently gave me a personal tour of the entire structure; it is more than beautiful; it is ultra-modern; it is exceptionally well-planned; at first sight it is almost breath-taking but one soon realizes that it is very purposeful and exceptionally functional. No doubt, there has been a tremendous amount of planning, during long and many com- mittee meetings. I congratulate the Board of Education and all concerned on the splendid results of their untiring efforts. We are proud that this area has been so richly blessed. A word to the parents and ratepayers. Just yesterday, one of my friends, in reference to my being present here this evening, said: quote "so, you now as a ratepayer will be able to see where the most of your tax-dollars are going". My answer to his statement was the old cliche; a cliche not used often enough, in my opinion. This was my reply--True, in Canada we have great mines and forests; Where, when, how you can meet & talk to Norm Cafik (M. P. Mr. Wells said an enrol- ment projection, done by the Ministry's planning and re- search branch, indicates. that the elementary school enrolment which totaled 1,456,840 in September of last year, will decrease by about 148,000 to a low of 1,308,000 in September of 1979. Lower enrolment is expected in both the public schools and the Roman Catholic separate and by September of 1982 it will have increased by more than 30,000. While the elementary school enrolment is decreas- ing, enrolment in the sec- ondary schools is expected to continue to increase to a peak of about 628,000 in 1977. The September 1971 sec- ondary school enrolment was 574,520. By September of 1982 the secondary school enrolment is expected to fall back to 539,000. Canadian asset is our children. That's our greatest dividend investment. True, there is a generation gap but basically it is only relative, and not nearly so great as some would have us believe. Recently, a very noted Psychiatrist said that in his opinion human nature hasn't changed but very little during this last ten thousand years. 1 wouldn't be surprised that when you, who are now parents, including myself, were eighteen, that someone was concerened about you and maybe worried when we didn't seem to conform to their convent- ions. So, let us not under-rate our girls and boys of to-day. Thousands are graduating from our colleges and universities; we have doctors, lawyers, agriculturists, businessmen etc. etc. Just think, that in ten short years the graduates of our Grade VIII'S are going to fall heir to this great Canada of ours. It seems to me, if the graduates from this school have become honest with themselves and others, if they hold respect for parents and elders and those in authority, if they appreciate good art and good literature and things which we think are to some degree worthwhile and if they have developed a sincere desire to go on and on tyes? A final word to the girls and boys; use every opportunity that this magnificent institution affords. If I have a message, it would be something like this; soon enough, you will run into all sorts of opinions as to what is right and wrong with this world. For some reason, too many people, yes both young and old are too prone to accept second-hand opinions. I say to you, have a mind of your own; have standards of your own; design these standards carefully and sincerely. Don't join groups who so easily find excuses to be against life. True, we all cannot be a Paul Henderson or a Julie Andrews but you all, each and every one, can do your best. My observations throughout the years have been that your best always seems to bring happiness and joy. Could I now repeat to you, perhaps, for the last time, our good old school motto--THERE IS NO SUCCESS WITHOUT LABOUR. Once again, I thank one and all for this honour. It is indeed, with pleasure that I declare this new addition Officially Open and as Dickens' Tiny Tim once said--God Bless You Every One. ; NIGHTS till 9:00 p.m. OPEN THURS., & FRIDAY [0% Rous: or Bowano
