The Dragon Boat races were in support of breast cancer sur- vivors, to help raise both funds and awareness of this dreaded disease. The event rallied 1,100 participants and many volunteers, and netted $106,000 for Ross Memorial Hospital in Lindsay, Uxbridge Cottage Hospital, Lakeridge Health in Port Perry and the R.S. McLaughlin Durham Region Cancer Centre to be opened in Oshawa in 2007. Breast cancer survivors have been dragon boat racing in Canada since 1996. The tradition dates back to the Chinese Qin dynasty (2,000 years ago). The Port Perry Festival, sponsored by The Ontario Trillium Foundation and the Great Blue Heron Charity Casino, was also supported by the Port Perry Rotary Club and numerous local business owners. Big winners included the Dragon Flies, who won the Ka- wartha Breast Cancer Survivor Challenge Race. Survivors Abreast took home the silver and Barrie’s Ribbons of Hope gar- nered bronze. The top individual pledge winner was Mary Lou Simpson of the Canterbury Silver Dragons, and the top three pledge donors were the Canterbury Silver Dragons, City of Kawartha Lakes Fire Flies and Lindsay's Healing Spirits. ‘We congratulate all those who participated or attended!
