"The Ladies Pair of Horses shown to a Ladies Phaeton is one of the most picturesque classes of the Horse Show. The horses should be perfectly matched, and of a'size that is in keeping with the Phaeton and yet of the refined type that would suit the Lady. As the Phaeton is the most attractive. ofs al) the carriages it goes without saying that the horses should be brilliant and attractive in appearance, and action, and yet have perfect manners in order to allow the Lady to have an enjoyable drive." When a hackney or, as it is sometimes called, a harness horse is lined up inthe show ring, he "spreads" by ex- tending the fore and hind legs. This dates back to the days when carriages were in general use. Then they were taught to "spread" so that oy Breeds top Hackneys they could not move suddenly when milady was stepping in or out of her carriage. If a horse is "spread" he must collect himself before start- ing to move forward: Ralph Sadler has been in "the hackney business' for many years now. There are a number of other harness horse breeders-in this-area, but Sadler is among the foremost in Ontario. Over the years, his horses have won top prizes wherever they have been exhibited; the Royal Winter Fair, the CNE the Peterborough Stakes, etc. Since most of the horses are sold, he is not always directly credited but people have come to realize that Ralph Sadler's hackneys are well-trained high-stepping winners. The breeder says his horses have a certain look, a way of holding their heads, which can be directly attributed to his 10 year old stud horse, a miagnificent black beast with white stock- ings. Mr. Sadler's home is adorned with "horsey" articles. A glass cabinet is filled withevery kind of china horse imaginable. A large plaster percheron stands on the floor. Photographs. of champion hackneys line the walls. Countless fair ribbons and awards are exhibited in the living room. And in' the corner stands a small table; its glass top supported by a .. cartwheel. The feet are brass baubles taken from a horse harness. The Sadler barn is an interesting place. The Pro- prietor explained the funny looking "dog"" with the horns wasreally a goat; there were kittens everywhere, a fire- house dog and even a little girl with a blond shock of hair (Sadler's grand-daughter), only two feet tall, who seemed thoroughly at home amidst these (what must have been to her) gigantic horses. DUMB JOCK Another training device is the" "English Dumb Jock", Mr. Sadler and his son-in-law Richard 'suited up' one of the horses to show how it works. The DJ is an X-shaped device fitted over the horse's back, the X's members being "two red-painted two by fours. Straps secure. the device © under the belly; a thong runs back to the cruppers and is looped securely under the 'horse's stub of a tail. A bridle with a rope bit connects the X-frame to the horse's mouth. Any violent bucking or kicking movement pulls on the thong and, indirectly, on therope bit, discouraging the animal from such behaviour. The device also teaches the horse to hold its head high and arch its neck, since any other posture will uncom- fortably tighten the bit. Dec. 13.1972 - 23 rather than breeding and training hackneys, Ralph Sadler replies; 'Because | like this better. Horses have been good to me and 1 enjoy working with them, training . them. There's money in this business; I've sold good horses, "and the buyer is always satisfied. Why not?" It seems like a pretty good way to earn a living. And for an ex city-dweller who has led a sheltered life, its a real experience to see one of these high spirited creatures pran- cing through the mud, legs pumping like pistons, breath coming in snorts, its great brown eyes glaring proudly.
