Born in Wiltshire County, Great Britain, on December 30. 1882, Mr. Buckland en- listed in the British Army at the age of 18 and was sent to South Africa after the Boer War broke out in 1899. Before reaching South Africa he spent some time guarding Boer prisoners on St. Helena, the forlorn island fortress which had previously housed a more illustrious guest; Napoleon Bonaparte. Buckland came to Canada in 1910 and married a Norwegion girl of previous acquaintance in 1911. When the first World War flared up the couple returned to the UK, where Buckland re- joined his old regiment. After the war they took up permanent residence in DANCING and ENTERTAINMENT at the CENTENNIAL TAVERN FRIDAY, DEC. 22 - 8:30 to 1:00 a.m. George Timms Trio Join our New Years Eve Celebrations Canada where he b ecame a postal supervisor, retiring in 1947. Mrs. Buckland died in 1957. Herbert Buckland has not failed to keep busy and occupied through the years of his retirement. Since his wife died, he has made several sight-seeing trips to Europe: notably to Great Britain and Norway, where he visited with his wife's family. A number of thick volumes on his bookcase are filled with pictures, momentogand photographs of places He has visited. Headings are neatly fountain-penned in semi- gothic letters. A written commentary describes each location. R Like many people, Mr. Buckland is a collector. His specialties are stamps and old letters. Thé stamp collection is extensive; for example, his "number one" book contains a variety of "penny blacks", the first paper stamp issued by Britain, dating back to the early 1800's. He has. honored by being named a Fellow of the Royal Philate- lic Society of Canada and also a Fellow of the Cana- dian Philatelic Society of Great Britain. He has many volumes of old letters, too. The prize number is a letter mailed in England in 1663. The Middle English handwriting is clearly legible. When not tending his African Violets, much of the Boer veteran's last ten years has been spent working on these collections. Herbert Buckland is spry for 90 years and, if his eyesight holds out, he'll probably still be working at his hobbies when he reaches 100. OPP corporal earns university degree Corporal N.J.
