Attendance at Christmas services the largest in history of Parish The Advent and Christmas Season was celebrated with joy and enthusiasm in 1972 at the Church of the Ascension: Festivities began on the first Sunday of December with a celebration of the Holy Communion when the Rector, the Rev. R.C. Rose, took as his topic "The King is Come". A large congre- gation was present. The congregations ap- peared to grow with every service during the Advent Season and on the second Sunday in Dec. two new members were added to the Congregation - of Christ's Flock by Holy Baptism. They were Robert Cole Parry, the young son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Parry and Tammy Louise Manns, in- fant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Reg Manns. On the following Sunday, the third Sunday in Advent, a Festival of Carols and Les- sons was held in the church in the presence of a capacity congregation. This is an ancient form. of service based on an Qrder of Service set forth in King's College Chapel, Cambridge Eng- land. It consists : of the reading of 'a number of Lessons beginning in the Third Chapter of Genesis and continuing through the books of Isaiah and Micah to the Gospels of the New Testament. The Lessons cover the prophesies con- © cerning the coming of the Messiah and the events surrounding the birth of Jesus of Nazareth. After each Lesson an appropriate Carol is sung by the congregation or an Anthem is sung by the choir. The readers this year were: The Hon. M.B. Dymond, M.D., M.P.P. for Ontario Riding, Mr. Robert Kenny, Reeve of Port Perry, Mr. Fred Christie, Councillor, Township of Reach, Mr. Ken Bateman, Chairman of the Advisory Board of the Church of the Ascension and the Rev. R.C. Rose, Rector. Mr. Cliff Crowell, Reeve- elect of Scugog Township was unable to participate'in the readings because of ill-health. The adult choir sang the Anthem "A Great and Mighty Wonder" translated from the words of St. Germanus, born 634 and set to the music of Praetorius, born 1571. On Dec. 20th over fifty members, of the congre- gation including members of the Sunday School and choir, plus a number of members of the Jr. Choir from the Roman Catholic Parish of the Immaculate Conception, met at the Parish Hall and proceeded to 'Go A-Carol- ling". Stops were made at the homes of a number of shut-in folk in the Village. The group returned to the Parish Hall for coffee, hot chocolate and cookies. On the morning of Dec. 24th another large congre- gation assembled in the Church and included in the Service was a Puppet Pre- sentation of '"The Friendly Beasts' and "Hansel and Gretel". This was a special Christmas treat for the children in the Parish. At the conclusion of the service the congregation reassembled in the Parish Hall for re- freshments. Since the birth- day of Jesus was being observed a giant birthday cake had been prepared and was shared by all. The climax of thé Festive Season came with the Mid- night celebration of the Holy Communion by candlelight. As the hour of service approached it became evi- dent that a large congre- gation was assembling. The beginning of the service had to be delayed while the Church wardens arranged for extra chairs to be brought from the Parish Hall. Finally the choir fol- lowed the Crucifer up the centre aisle and the service oy, a a Port Perry Star has a new "staff member" in budding cartoonist. Bill Wanamaker, son of Mr. and Mrs. B. Wanamaker, Seagrave. Bill says he enjoys drawing, particularly cartoons and the Star readers will find his first i a contribution on the editorial page in this issue. 2 He is educated in Seagrave, Port Perry and Durham College, where he took a Graphic yil% Arts course. He is employed as a typographer at Howard & Smith Ltd., Toronto. The Star LA hopes the first steps he makes in these columns will gain him sufficient experience to attain a bright future as a cartoonist. yo began, every seat was ocu- pied. At the request of the Churchwardens, the Rector dedicated two new proces- sional candles, made by Mr. Murray Bruce, and a new railing for the Chancel steps. The new candles were car- ried in procession by James Rose and Mark Murray. The Rector's sermon was hased on the old English Christmas Greeting, '"'Was- sail", that is, be thou hale or whole for Christ came to - make us whole. The choir sang the old Welsh Carol "Poverty. A check of Parish records has shown this Christmas service te have been the largest both in attendance and number of commun- icants in the history of the Parish.
