NN Ra aa vr AE NORRIE RF SRRARA Is Of Facts and Fantasy by Reta M. Berrill A Belated Tribute | We were house guests at the home of a mutual friend. She had known our family and their families. We were less than strangers but this was our first meeting and our paths would never actually cross again. Yet, she became an unforgetable image. She, a lady nearing the end of a long teaching career. We, young, shy, immature, unskilled and unschooled. Also, frightened, frustrated and recovering from a serious injury that had kept us within the four walls of a hospital for many months. But we were not bitter. And perhaps this was our only hope of salvage in the eyes of another. She was quick to observe that we put such characters as seen and saw, did and done, gone and went in the proper places and, remembered that 'ing, should never be ignored. She'd known that schools had been far from us and transportation was nil. And now, even that old reliable, Shanks Pony, was indisposed. Realizing that this lady know more about us than we knew of ourself we answered her questions regarding our scholastic achievement and lack of it, without hesitation. And when the session was over she simply clasped our hands within her own and said slowly and seriously, "My dear, Don't ever tell anyone and no one will ever know." A lifetime has been spent trying to be worthy of this praise. But perhaps this was her intention. Every nugget of wisdom we've gleaned through the years have been a reminder of her. We learned that Trial and Error is a harsh teacher and the needed discipline must come entirely from ones self. There's no one to care if we rate an A plus, or a Z minus. But with each step forward--came hope that some day we'd really reach that plateau where, indeed--no one will ever know. This was our goal. There was no diploma or other piece of paper to prove advancement and we learned to realize the truth of this, said by someone who wished to remain anonymous. "Strange how much you've got to know before you know how little you know." And we thought on this, said by that Roman Philosopher, Seneca, "speech is the index of the mind." If that lady has thus inspired even a small fraction of the many lives she touched, her reward should be truly great. And she'll be well remembered. We pay tribute to the late Miss Laura Orchard who was known to many, if not most of our readers. We owe her much.
