The snowmobile pop- ulation of Ontario will in- crease from 68,000 in 1969 to an estimated 275,000 vehicles in the near future. With so many of the ma- chines in use, and a mush- rooming fatality list, the police feel now is the time to inform owners about the potential danger. The policeman noted most snowmobile fatalities were caused by ramming parked cars. Other mishaps high on the list are colliding with moving vehicles, falling through ice, and running into traffic while attempting to cross highways. less com- mon means of death include tangling with trains, getting mangled by barbed-wire fences, and hitting ice cov- ered rocks. One Ontario resident was choked to death when his scarf got caught in his machine's clutch. After showing slides cov- ering safely practices and rules of the road, Officer Hannah gave a short talk on emergency . procedures to follow in case a companion is seriously injured.
