Bev. Muir chaired the meeting and called first upon Mr. Bill Smye, Reg- ional Director of the Ontario Association for the Mentally Retarded. He explained the duties of the different execu- tive officers and committee members. and further des- cribed 'the set up of the OAMR. He pointed out that associations work together for the betterment of the individual. Other associa- tions providing assistance to this area are: Christopher Robin Home; Glenholme School, Oshawa; Ontario Society for Cripple Children; Ontario Hospital School, Orillia; Oshawa - Ontario County Health Unit; Adult Occupational Centre, Ed- gar; Mental Retardation Centre, Toronto; Hospital For Sick Children, Toronto; Ontario Hospital, Whitby; Community and Social Ser- vices. There are over 100 individuals from this area, presently receiving aid from these organizations. Following Mr. Smye's in- formative talk, Mrs. Muir called for further nomin- ations from the floor. She empha- sized that each area has different needs and it is up to each local association to find the needs, decide which gets priority, then fulfill it and do it well. We must never lose our perspective -- keep their needs, not our needs, up- permost. At the present time it is felt that Central Seven can best serve this area through a family service program and developing or educating public awareness of the need for a local organization.
