Cafik, M.P., the Post Office. The writer is B. Napier Simpson Jr. archi- tect and an authority on older buildings and restoration of same. He gives his reasons why building should be saved. Mr. Norman Cafik, M.P. Parliament Buildings, OTTAWA. Dear Mr. Cafik- I have learned with much dismay that the rumour to demolish the Post Office building on the main street in Port Perry is now an actual fact, and I hasten to write to you to express my total disagreement with this pol- icy. I plead that your influence may be such to reverse this decision and save this building for Port Perry. The Post Office in Port Perry is one of a series of more or less stock designs which were built by the postal authorities around the turn of the century, and while archi- tecturally, perhaps no great LEELA LAA ARLRARLALALLALAAALLAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAIALAALLLARLLARRRNANSNNSNNNNSNNSSSNNSNNNSNSNNS 0303530303035 55 3530 3035 030 3035.50 30 30 0 0 I I I HH HH HH HHH HHH HHNY BARBRA TLALLARALALRRSAALLANSANNNNS SONNY S SISSY SR RH HEH HH HHH HII IIH IRIN Reg. $7.95 sq. yd. for NAN 253 SEE EAA RST AAAAATTLAAAALTTLANTTLAAANTTTTTTTETTITTTTAATATALANNTIT VV RAANNVNNNNNANNNNNNNNNNNNSNS NSS SSN NN NAAN ANN SNS AAS SANA SAS NN EE 0 3535 353 035 35.5.5. 55.35 35.555 55.95.95 55.55.95 55.95.95.55 95.95. 35.95.35. 55.95.9555 55.95.9555 95.35.55.95.55 55 95.95.55 95.95. 55.95.95.95.55.35 95.95.95 55.95.55 35 50.95 55.90.55 55 50.50 55 50 50 50 50 35 50 50 30 30 30 30 30 30 30 0 30 30 30 30 0 0 0 SE SH INSTI H IIHS | Save CARAVELLE COMANCHE a CARPETS Send prize, they have blended surprisingly well into the townscape of our older towns in Canada. . Perhaps this postal design fitted into the town pattern of Port Perry "better than in most towns, because the entire main street of Port Perry is made up of buildings which are only slightly older than the Post Office itself, and therefore there is a lovely sense of architectural order on this main street. The location of this Post Office in Port Perry is excellent from a functional point-of-view, and aesthe- tically, it most definitely makes a contribution to the general feeling of the character of this Town. It is regretable that the policy in recent years has been to demolish these old buildings. I would urge that all efforts be made to insure that this poor planning process be arrested, and particularly in the case of Port Perry, every effort be made to see that this building be retained. The argument can always be made that the old building is no longer useful for the modern function, and unless those in authority are willing to realize the importance of our heritage, we will have no fine buildings left in our country "to pass on to succeeding generations. The Post Office in Port Perry is a well built structure, and undoubtedly a little behind in some safety and mechanical aspects, but this does not mean to say that the building cannot be renovated and made to be useful for many years to come. As an architect very much involved with restoration projects in Ontario, I am only too conscious of our architec- tural. heritage. It was be- cause of this interest I was .requested to conduct a walking tour of historic buildings in the town, in 1971, Port Perry's Centennial. In making my assessment of what was worth showing in Port Perry, I most certainly made use of the Post Office building, and still feel very strongly that this building is important to the Town. If I canbe of any assistance in guiding you towards what I hope will be, saving this building, I should be only too willing to talk to you further at your convenience. Yours truly, B. Napier Simpson Jr., Architect "All are born equal" Dear Sir: Going over the rezoning story in last week's STAR I was shocked to read about the Rosa Street woman who felt that we working class people are too low to live near her. Dear Sir: I would like to reply to the person who questioned the thinking of the people of Port Perry in last week's paper regarding the election and selection of the council and committees. I too, am a long time and interested observer of events in Port Perry as well as a + participant in many of them and I resent heartily the implication made in this will all leave the same way. Woman, whoever you are, you are no better than me or anyone else. Remember that. If you feel you belong to a better class you better move to someplace where you can live alone and have fun in a class all by yourself. I would like to meet you and have you explain what you mean by a better class, because I can not understand you at all. If this person who so glibly speaks of honesty, courage and sincerity possessed enough of these qualities to sign his name and to make direct accusations rather than thinly veiled allega- tions, those "thinking peo- ple" to whom he appeals would be in a better position to judge the merits of the * "aggressive young man' represented by him. As a past and present member of boards, com- mittees and organizations in this community I would like to think that it is possible to be gggressive without being abrasive or abusive.
