Mr. Reeves told hi-lights in the life of the composer, Beethoven and mentioned that, in the last years of his life, Beethoven was almost totally deaf and could hear only the loudest noises. He . couldn't hear his own music but he had a strong faith, and, when he was dying, he said, with his last breath, "I shall hear in heaven." The gathering then sang the Song of Joy from the Ninth Symphony. As solo, Mr. Reeves sang, "Jesus Is the Sweetest Name I Know." The service concluded with Charles Wesley's great Hymn, "O for a Thousand Tongues to Sing." As a prelude to it, the Minister told the story of how Wesley received the inspiration for this Hymn. It was revealed that Chas. Wesley usually celebrated each anniversary of his birthday by writing a NEWS Hymn of praise to God. On the first anniversary of his spiritual birthday, his con- version, he wrote the Hymn, "0 for a thousand tongues to sing my great Redeemer's praise.' Thursday evening we had an unusual Bingo. Prize winners were Mrs. Letcher, Mrs. Phoenix, Mrs. Pearcey, Shaw Hamilton (2) and Russ Brown. The president, Mrs. Rout- ley chaired the meeting. The meeting opened with the singing of 'Love Divine." IMPENDING DISASTER Port. It's bad enough rushing out in the night knowing, that a haven is near to ease the pain and calm all fear, without driving those extra miles to safely give birth to this unborn child. If they close the Obstetrical wing, think of the panic it will bring. A father to be, heart filled with fear, roars down the highway, grinding gears. Speed limits, the farthest thing from his mind. Spurred on by fright . . . he's driving blind. His wife sits in pain those added miles, for there's no place near to deliver this child. What a sad pity our Government can't see that "0" wing is money well spent. Peter Hvidsten 985-3089 The scripture lesson, Samuel 20: 17 - 23; 35-42 was read by Mrs. D. Ashton. Meditation by Mrs. Routley, "In the Light of God's Love." Miss Simpson led in prayer. A poem was read by Mrs. Routley titled "What Love Can Do." The offering was received. The minutes of the last meeting were read and approved. New committees were read. Visiting report was given by Miss Vera Leach. Mrs. Alfred Fisher and Mrs. C. Bryant were in charge of the programme. Mrs. Fisher read a poem "The Seed". Mrs. Fisher led us in a very thought provo- king bible study on 'The Prodigal Son." Mrs. Bryant read a very interesting article on the life of George Matheson, who wrote the hymn "O Love that Wilt not Let me Go." Following this, everyone joined in the sing- ing of this hymn. Mrs. E. heron closed the meeting with prayer. Lunch was served by the lunch com- mittee. Mrs. H. Ashton thanked Mrs. Batten for her hospitality. The March meeting will be held at the home of Mrs. E. Heron. Mr. and Mrs. Donald Purdy, Orangeville, visited at the home of Mr. and Mrs. D. Ashton on Friday even- ing. Blackstock: Women's In- stitute met at 12:30 February 7 in the Township Hall. After a delcious dessert luncheon we were happy to have Mr. James VanCamp speak tous. Mr. Van Camp is Administrator of Port Perry Hospital. As the possible closing of the Obstetrical Wing of the Port Perry Hospital is of great concern to the people "of Cartwright, we were most interested in Mr. Van Camps views. He first spoke on "The role of the small hospital," secondly, The Ob- stetrical Wing and its impor- tance. This was followed by a question and answer period. A resolution voicing the reasons for the disapproval of the possible closing was formed and passed by the Institute. Copies were sent to Mr. Van Camp, Dr. Porter - Minister of Health, Mr. Alex Carruthers, M.P.P., Dr. M Dymond, M.P. P. Mrs. F. Hoskin spoke briefly on the motto, '"'Con- sider the truth, he never makes progress until h: sticks his neck out. This was followed by a song and a skit on fault finding. The minutes of the last meeting were read and adopted. The treasurer's report given. The roll call was answered by "A hobby for older people." We have been contacted by the Hydro-Workers, asking that we provide them with a lunch at a later date. It was moved and sec- -onded that we give each of the 4H leaders a gift as a token of our appreciation of their work done with the girl's club. The meeting closed with "0 Canada."
