The only exception is in the case of Roman Catholics in most places. If they wish, catholic parents may designate that their school taxes go to church schools. However, non catholic Christians must pay taxes to a public school board and then pay extra, if they can afford it, to have their children attend a school where religion is not regularly ridiculed. In Alberta several thousand protestant parents are trying, without much success, to stop public schools from teaching that, 'the evolution theory is now accepted by all," and "Almost no one believes the: outdated creation theory anymore." Closer to home a group of Ontario County parents have asked Rev. R.H. James, pastor of Rossland Rd. Free Methodist Church in Whitby and Social Credit Candidate in the last federal election, to make representation to Queens Park on their behalf. The parents are concerned about books in our own schools which take God's name in vain and hint at pre marital sex. I assume the schools do not also make the writings of communist founder Karl Marx available to students. If they did the kids would see where the other claptrap originated from. If you are a Christian in Port Perry your children must go to school in Oshawa. For catholics, students may be bussed next year, since the catholic school board refuses to consider making school facilities available here. But at least the school and the bus will be paid for out of taxes. Protestants have to be able to pay to send children to Emmanuel elementary school in Oshawa, and later to Durham Christian High School in Bowmanville. Durham High School has to provide for students from Port Perry, Peterborough, and everywhere in between. When it comes to high school catholics and protestants are in the same boat. The same provincial officials who refuse to recognize the existance of protestants at all assume that a student stops being a catholic by the time he reaches high school age. Or maybe they just hope. In the bigger cities many protestant parents send their elimentary school children to catholic schools, believing that catholic training is certainly better than atheist teaching. In Toronto this practice has become so wide spread that the catholic school board is now negotiating with the public board to buy some of the empty public school buildings. Attendance at catholic schools by protestant children has thrown the whole school situation out of proportion. Something is quite clearly wrong with the thinking, or lack of it, at Queens Park. It shouldbe the parents who decide where their children will be educated, and therefore where their school taxes should go, not the government. When deciding if a school is entitled to receive the tax share of the parents who send children there only academic standards should be considered not the religion of the parents. How would you react if village council refused to plow snow from your street because all the people who live there are Anglicans, but still expected you to pay taxes toward the cost of the snowplow? Of course it is a silly example. Village council would not even consider such a thing. But Queens Park does. reduction of $500 and a' minimum reduction of '$100, effective January 1, 1973. Pensions The basic rate of Old Age Security Pensions is to be increased to $100 per month from the current rate of $82.88 effective April 1, 1973. The combined Old Age Security Guaranteed Income Supplement becomes $170 a month for a single person and $325 a month for a maried couple. CUSTOM'S DUTIES The Government is recommending to Parlia- ment temporary cuts in the taxes on a wide range of consumer products. In choosing these products that would be subject to tariff reductions and in deciding how large reductions should be, every effort has been made to avoid any adverse impact on production and employment in our factories and farms across Canada. However, at the same time the Government wishes to ensure that the tariff reduc- tions_would be sufficiently broad in scope to have a significant effect in dampen- ing the upward pressure in consumer prices. CHANGES RELATED TO TAX REFORM Further improvements to tax reform were introduced and these include: An important tax deferral is proposed to permit farm- land to pass tax free from generation to generation. This would mean that a farmer would be able to pass his farmland onto his child- ren without paying tax at the time of his death on any accrued capital gain. the deferral would apply if the land is being used as a farm by the tax-payer or his child at the time of the tax-payer's death, and if the land is left to a child or children resident in Canada.
